'Gotham City Impostors' Screenshots and Trailer Highlight Creative Violence

While the previous two animated trailers for Gotham City Impostors did much to set up the idea behind this downloadable shooter, they didn’t quite explain how the gameplay will work. In Impostors, players are tasked with creating their own Gotham City facsimile of either Joker or Batman who will then do battle on various Gotham City locales.

It’s a concept that is easy to explain, but is better served when seen first hand. That’s why Warner Bros. Interactive have sent over not just some new screenshots for the game, but also a new trailer.

Gotham City Impostorsart style, which has been highlighted in previously released screens and trailers, is still an acquired taste, but the concept of creatively dispatching enemies is beginning to grow on us. It’s been a hard pill to swallow, imitation Batmen going the lethal route, but this trailer for the game provides some justification for that design decision.

Essentially, because these impostors are without the means of Bruce Wayne, they must resort to more creative weaponry. That isn’t to say there won’t be a plethora of gadgets and gizmos with which players can eliminate the opposing team of six, it just means their construction and capabilities will be a little shoddy.

What we’re still curious about is how much customization goes into creating each impostor — how much is player controlled? As a downloadable title that will rise and fall on its ability to entice the player with options, we haven’t been taken too far in depth into that player creation.

It is important to note, though, that the game’s release is right around the corner, leaving the final bit of exploration for when we finally get our hands on the game. I wasn’t too sold at first, but after several trailers, it’s beginning to grow on me.

Does Gotham City Impostors straying away from the traditional non-violent route of Batman put you off at all? What will be the biggest draw for this game: the multiplayer gameplay, the character creation, or the property?

Gotham City Impostors releases January 10, 2012 on the PSN, XBLA, and Games for Windows — Live.
