Hard though it may be to believe, for some gamers, Batman: Arkham City just isn't enough Batman. Sure, Rocksteady Studios' latest is one of the best reviewed games of the year, but what comes next for players who long to roam the streets of Gotham City? Why, Gotham City Impostors, of course. Just today, publisher Warner Bros. Interactive revealed the game's release date and announced an imminent open beta.
Gotham City Impostors is Monolith's take on a downloadable, team-based shooter, though the game's bizarro visual style is unlikely to remind anyone of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive -- much less Arkham City. Impostors' warring factions, the Bats and the Jokerz, make the scene decked out in colorful, low-rent versions of the costumes worn by their namesakes. Given the look Monolith is going for, the recent Gotham City Impostors animated trailer makes perfect sense.
Character customization is a big part of what makes the game tick, and Warner Bros. Interactive is promising "unprecedented customization options including insane costumes, homemade gadgets and a wide range of traditional and inventive weapons." Players will have the chance to put all those gadgets to use when Gotham City Impostors launches on Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, and PC January 10, 2012.
Perhaps even more exciting is that Gotham City Impostors will host an open beta in December. A closed beta has been running since September, but Monolith is ready to open the game to a wider audience. Interested players should head right on over to the Gotham City Impostors web page, where they will be given the option to "Join the Cause" or "Chicken Out." No specific date in December has been singled out for the beta's launch, but a message on the game's website does note that there are a "limited number of codes."
Ranters, will you be taking to the streets as one of the Gotham City Impostors? Have you signed up for the open beta?
Gotham City Impostors releases January 10, 2012, for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.
