Google's GDC 2019 keynote address revealed its Stadia gaming platform, which aims to be the next-generation of video gaming. Google showed off some tech demos of what Stadia is capable of and also revealed some of the games potentially coming to the platform, including Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Doom Eternal, and NBA 2K. Some of the presenters at the keynote also talked about what Google Stadia would be capable of from a hypothetical standpoint, including 1,000 player battle royale matches.

Right now, the standard battle royale match typically consists of 100 players, with PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and Fortnite sticking to that number. Other battle royale games have experimented with different numbers, like Apex Legends' 60 players, and the upcoming Battlefield 5 Firestorm battle royale mode's 64 player total. With current-gen hardware, it doesn't seem possible for battle royale games to hit 1,000 players, which drives home the point of just how powerful Stadia is.

Google claimed during the presentation that Stadia is more powerful than the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X combined, so it's definitely delivering significant processing power for developers to take advantage of. However, a 1,000 player battle royale wasn't actually shown off during the presentation, and it's unclear if such a concept has been tested or not. Increasing player size to that amount could come with its own share of issues that haven't been anticipated yet, so it remains to be seen if anyone will actually strive to hit that number for their game.

Battle royale fans may be disappointed to learn that none of the major battle royale games have been confirmed for Google Stadia as of yet. Jade Raymond promised that games would be revealed this summer, including the platform's launch lineup, but stopped short of providing specifics. So at this point, it's impossible to say if Stadia will feature some of the world's most popular games, like Apex Legends and Fortnite.

Raymond didn't reveal exactly when in the summer Stadia's launch lineup would be confirmed. However, with Sony absent from E3 2019, perhaps Google will host a press conference at gaming's biggest show in June. That's just speculation at this time, however, and those interested in Stadia will just have to stay tuned for more information.

Stadia will launch in 2019.
