Google is taking the next step when it comes to Android OS exclusive games. Google is planning on launching a new gaming service called Google Play Games that will be available on Microsoft Windows and laptops sometime in 2022.

Google has certainly been expanding its foray into gaming over the last few years. Google Stadia has spent the last couple of years competing with more traditional console and PC gaming devices through a streaming service, but it has since shuttered its own game development studios. It appears now the internet giant is looking at a new way to bring its mobile game library to PCs in the coming year.

In a statement to The Verge, Greg Hartrell, Google’s product director of games on Android and Google Play, said that Google Play Games will be more than just offering previously mobile-only games on computers. There will also be a mechanism that will allow for seamless switching from a mobile device or Google Chromebook to Windows PCs and vice-versa.

A separate Google spokesperson said that the company has built that app that will allow users to play Android games on the PC on its own. That means it has not partnered with any other companies in order to build it up. How going it alone will factor into how well it works is obviously yet to be seen.

There isn't a great deal of info known about Google Play Games outside of the scant details Google has shared so far. The service did also get a brief tease during this year's edition of The Game Awards but those watching the 3.5-hour show could be excused for not noticing that tease considering that they were being inundated with new trailers and brand new game reveals. Among the details still left to divulge is the official release date as the company has so far only said the service is coming sometime next year.

Whenever it does arrive, Google Play Games will be yet another attempt for the company to find another avenue into the video game industry. In addition to the launch of Google Stadia, the company reportedly also once considered purchasing Fortnite creator Epic Games. Instead, Google has apparently picked this avenue for its next endeavor.

Google Play Games is due to launch sometime in 2022.
