When it comes to adapting a video game to a movie, the result is not always pleasing to the source material's fan base. Take the Uncharted movie starring Tom Holland as a recent example, or the reboot of the Resident Evil silver screen release, both of which were only fairly well received. However, going the opposite way and adapting a movie into a game can yield good results, as anyone who was around for GoldenEye 007 on Nintendo 64 can attest to. Given its popularity among older gamers, many have been hoping for a remaster for some time now, and it looks as though speculations are continuing to rise.
According to a recent report from VGC, the GoldenEye trademark has been given a second extension, granted to Danjaq, LLC, which holds elements of the James Bond franchise. While there's been no word at the time of writing of what this means, undoubtedly, it will spark yet more rumors that a remastered version of the classic N64 release may be on the horizon.
While some may be wondering why it's yet to become actualized, there are numerous issues when it comes to doing a remaster of GoldenEye 007, namely down to licensing. With the game's developer, Rare, now owned by Microsoft, remaking a title that was originally developed for Nintendo has proven tricky. Not to mention the fact that agreements would need to be met in order for any studio to make another game in the James Bond or 007 series. This means that a lot of permission is needed before a new entry, or remaster, could see the light of day, but maybe there is a glimmer of hope with this latest development.
At the start of this year, Xbox One achievements for GoldenEye were spotted online, which caused many to suspect that the game was indeed getting a remaster. However, there have been official words from any official parties involved with its supposed development as to whether or not it actually is going ahead. On top of that, Jeff Grubb of VentureBeat speculates that any plans to unveil such a hotly-anticipated release may be put on hold due to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, what with GoldenEye's Soviet themes.
As one of the best Nintendo 64 games of all time, it's hardly surprising that fans would love to see it make a triumphant return, especially in this era of remasters and remakes. Whether or not it will happen remains to be seen, but it's clear that this quarter of a century old title is still beloved after all this time.
