In the wake of the release of GoldenEye 007 on Nintendo Switch, fans have started sharing a method to make the game playable with modern first-person shooter controls. While still being one of the most influential shooters of its time, GoldenEye 007's control scheme is wildly unorthodox compared to modern FPS games.

GoldenEye 007 was released for the Nintendo 64 in 1997 and gained a reputation as one of the best first-person shooters available on consoles at the time. Rumors about the game being rereleased or remastered circulated for years before finally being announced in 2022 to be coming to the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack as well as Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. The game was also made available on Xbox Game Pass with the Xbox version also coming with achievements and 4K support.

Gamers on Xbox and Switch were quick to jump on the classic title, but many had to come to terms with the game's infamous control scheme. Rather than typical dual-stick FPS controls, GoldenEye 007 was designed for the Nintendo 64 controller which had only one analog stick. While there is a wireless Nintendo 64 controller for Switch, it remains out of stock on Nintendo's website, meaning most players will have to use either Joy-Cons or the Switch Pro Controller. However, fans were quick to find a way to play GoldenEye 007 with modern FPS controls by using the "Change Button Assignments" option in the Switch's settings.

In short, one can get these controls by flipping the functions of the analog sticks, mapping the ZR button to ZL, mapping the ZL button to L, and then selecting the 1.2 Solitaire control setting in GoldenEye 007's pause menu. Reddit user Cuesport77 shared this method on the Nintendo Switch subreddit ahead of the game's launch. Since then, other fans have helped to spread the word. These problems with controls are thankfully not an issue on the Xbox version of GoldenEye 007 as it has integrated options for modern FPS controls that players can access through the pause menu.

Regardless of what some may think about GoldenEye 007 in retrospect, these versions of the game are significant as they are the first time it ever has been re-released. Those who worked on these new versions were sure to integrate features like achievements and 4K support, but other long-sought features like online play for GoldenEye 007 or better integration of modern control schemes seem to have been put on the back burner. Regardless, this rerelease ensures that fans old and new will be able to enjoy this classic title more easily.

GoldenEye 007 first released for the Nintendo 64 in 1997. It is available now for Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
