'Goldeneye 007' Retail Exclusives Offer Retro Fun

GoldenEye 007 Multiplayer Modifiers

Goldeneye 007 for the Wii hopes to recapture the magic gamers experienced long ago on the Nintendo 64 by updating the classic for the latest generation.

Today, Activision revealed some of the purchase/pre-order exclusives that retailers will be carrying in an attempt to sway you into purchasing from their particular outlet.

Without further ado, let's take a look at the exclusives:

GameStop is offering an unlock code for a game variant titled "Invisibility Mode." In this mode players will become invisible for a set amount of time during the game allowing them to sneak up and dispatch the other players ninja style. This exclusive lasts until December 31st. Here's a trailer:

Best Buy is offering an unlock code for a game variant titled "Tag Mode." In this mode players will only be able to kill the opposition if they are not “it.” Once you tag another player and they become “it” - only then can you unleash the mayhem. Like "Invisibility Mode," this exclusive is also only valid until until December 31st. Here's a trailer:

Wal-Mart is offering an Oddjob-themed shirt with the moniker “Cheater” emblazoned on it — a throwback to the N64 roots. This is my personal favorite bonus - since I figure the other two downloadable variants will become available online (or in some other form) later in 2011.

For those who might not be able to fork over the dough just yet and are fearful that they will miss out by not purchasing any of these bonuses, don’t worry the retail game has you covered.

"GoldenEye 007 features an unprecedented lineup of four-player split-screen multiplayer options that encourage social gaming, with over 50 total characters, including eight classic Bond characters, ten maps, three standard modes and 17 special modifiers that allow gamers to create hundreds of game combinations."

For many gamers, myself included, Goldeneye was the start of a long and glorious love affair with FPS multiplayer. Since then, games like Halo and Call of Duty have fought tooth and nail to earn a larger place in my heart.

While I am excited to jump back into Goldeneye on the Wii, my excitement could be fleeting. For the most part, I feel as though I've moved on. The simplicity of the multiplayer on the N64 was unlike any experience that could be had on a home console.

Today, if a game doesn’t have multiplayer it comes as a shock. Variety is now the spice of life when it comes to multiplayer and recreating an old concept on a machine with less than stellar graphical capability isn’t going to cut it for me. Perhaps I could be wrong about Goldeneye and the game will reintroduce me to my younger self - who was obsessed with ‘Slappers Only’ - but I fear that Bond’s old martini just won’t give me the buzz it used to.
