A pile of major video games are releasing next week and while Uncharted 3 may come top to mind, on the multi-platform side of things there are high profile franchises each seeing a new installment. Warner Bros. Interactive has Lord of the Rings: War in the North, the brutally violent co-op adventure that explores more of Middle-earth, and Activision has the remake of the remake in GoldenEye 007: Reloaded with its 4-player splitscreen action and 60 fps frame rate.
Featuring fan-favorite characters and based on the Peter Jackson Lord of the Rings movies, War in the North follows three heroes on their adventures during the time the Fellowship quests to Mordor to dispose of the ring. There’s Eradan, a Dunedain Ranger of the North, Andriel, an Elven loremaster taught by Lord Elrond, and Farin, a Dwarvin Champion, and together they must battle Agaundaur, a lieutenant of Sauron.
Visiting more of the locales referenced in the books that we’ve never seen before, combined with 3-player co-op make War in the North a must-play for fantasy games and Tolkien fans.
Part two of our doubleheader also takes its notes from a famed film franchise, the one about Bond, James Bond. Everyone remembers GoldenEye on the N64, a game that revolutionized the shooter genre and arguably, console action games. It’s one of the very few amazing video game movie tie-ins that was good and for years developers attempted to recreate that experience and its success to no avail.
That was of course, until last year, when Activision brought a remake of the game to the Nintendo Wii. It re-cast the main characters with Daniel Craig as the new lead instead of Pierce Brosnan and now, that game has been remastered for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
Like War in the North, Reloaded also brings back a lot of familiar faces – both games are made for the fans.
Picking up either of these titles?
Fun fact: Sean Bean played the villain in GoldenEye the film and later played Boromir in the Lord of the Rings films.
GoldenEye 007: Reloaded releases November 1, 2011 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, while The Lord of the Rings: War in the North hits for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
