While it might not have Steam's commanding presence and authority, nor Epic Games Store's novelty and impressive promotional budget, CD Projekt RED's Good Old Games is still trucking along, doing its own thing. Namely, GOG's schtick is that it's a platform for DRM-free games, which makes it perfect for indies and smaller-scale productions, specifically.
This approach to selling games isn't nearly for Good Old Games as forcing DRM and appeasing publishers would be, of course, but the platform still hosts all manner of sales and giveaways practically around the clock. In fact, its latest promotion is particularly exciting, as GOG is now giving away Dex, a highly-rated cyberpunk RPG that had first launched a few years back.
Much as was the case with GOG's Postal 2 giveaway on PC, platform users can claim Dex at absolutely no charge and proceed to download a DRM-free copy of the game afterward. Interested gamers have roughly two more days to claim their copies, it's worth pointing out. A side-scrolling action RPG, Dex puts its players into the shoes of a freshly recruited resistance fighter working to dismantle a dangerous super-corporation, and it takes inspiration from properties such as Deus Ex and Blade Runner.
Long-time platform users will know that Dex is just the latest in the long line of GOG PC game giveaways, with one of last year's highlights being the horror classic I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream. GOG had also given away the indie darling Dagon earlier in 2021, highlighting the fact that gamers interested in getting DRM-free games legally without having to pay for them may wish to keep an eye out for future promotions of this kind, as there are almost certainly going to be more giveaways available in the future.
It's also worth pointing out that GOG often expands its classic game catalog, reintroducing old and forgotten classics to the market. What's particularly important and noteworthy is that GOG often works with developers to get their games in working order for modern PCs, which can be a huge boon for titles released in, say, the late 1990s and the early aughts.
Those who haven't had much experience with GOG may be skeptical of the service, as it doesn't get into the limelight nearly as often as some of the more popular game launchers and marketplaces do. That being said, Good Old Games is a subsidiary of CD Projekt RED, the developers of The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, and the GOG storefront has a remarkable 1% refund rate, which ought to speak to the quality of this service and how customer-centric it actually is.
