In the run-up to Godzilla vs. Kong, many fans have been passionately debating which of the giant beasts could best the other in a straight-up fight. Some fans, however, have theorized that there may be more going on in the film than just a straight-up tussle between two iconic characters, and it seems that they may have been right if the latest leak is anything to go by.

It's become a surprisingly common occurrence: upcoming twists and reveals for big-budget films are being spoiled by announcements for related merchandise. Some of that may have to do with the Coronavirus delays pushing back a lot of films: toys and merchandise are often made on very strict schedules and aren't as easy to push back compared to a film release.

Regardless, it would seem Godzilla vs. Kong is the latest big-budget blockbuster to be undercut by its plastic counterparts, so be warned: potential spoilers from here on out. The company Smyths Toys is apparently producing a new action figure of none other than the famous Mechagodzilla himself. Images of the figure surfaced online courtesy of Kaiju News Outlet.

The name is fairly self-explanatory: Mechagodzilla is basically just a robotic Godzilla. The character has been around forever as one of the many Kaiju that Godzilla fights and is commonly considered to be his archenemy. Featuring a metallic outer layer that protects him from harm and provides all kinds of technological advantages, Mechagodzilla is a tough foe even for a being as powerful as Godzilla.

While toys don't always have a direct correlation to the films themselves, it would seem that there's a good chance Mechagodzilla will be in Godzilla vs. Kong based on the toy's description: "A robotic Apex predator with unstoppable powers of laser destruction, MechaGodzilla was created in secret to destroy Godzilla and end the reign of monsters." A surprise third contender in the showdown between Godzilla and Kong would allow the film to have both characters survive without disappointing either set of fans and if that wasn't enough to convince anyone, the toy's description as reads: "Re-enact your favorite scene from the Godzilla Vs Kong movie!"

It's impossible to ever say for sure until the movie is finally out of course, but from this information, it does look like the King of the Monsters will be facing off against his longtime rival, possibly with some help from an oversized gorilla companion. Whether the film eventually reveals Mechagodzilla in the marketing run-up or waits to leave him as a fun surprise for audiences, there's no doubt that longtime Godzilla fans will certainly be getting quite the spectacle when the film finally releases.

Godzilla vs. Kong releases March 31, 2021, in theaters and on HBO Max.
