Hades, the ultra-successful Greek Mythos Roguelike, has really gone through it all. Over the course of its early access, Hades sold around 700,000 copies, but now thanks to the 1.0 version, it's crossed over a million very quickly! And, who can blame such success? The game is incredible, and people have always loved interesting takes on classic mythos from different cultures, especially those from Greek and Norse Cultures.

And yes, Hades has all the horrible yet divine Olympus Gods everyone has come to know and love. It's part of the reason the game is so amazing, but to be fair, there are tons of other reasons as well. So, this list is really just an excuse to gush about Supergiant Games' incredibly artistic abilities, their character writing, and their fresh takes on classic designs.

Updated August 20th, 2021 by Jacob Buchalter: Finally, the internationally beloved roguelike Hades is now available on all mainline consoles, and is even on the Xbox Game Pass. There's nothing better than an indie company finding worldwide success, and Supergiant Games is one of the most deserving companies out there. So, with all the new players coming in thanks to the new console releases, it seemed like a good time to go back through the whole cast, add a few new "God-Like" characters, and rank them all from worst to best while fans wait eternally hopefully for news of a sequel or even DLC.

Warning: May contain spoilers for Hades. Additionally, these rankings take the God's usefulness in-game into account, their character writing, their growth as a character over the course of the game, and their visual design as well. So, this is more than just a list talking about the best Boons from each Olympic God and so on.

17 Hades: The God & King Of The Underworld

Hades - Splash Art Of Hades That Players See From Time To Time When They Start New Runs
  • Design: B+
  • Usefulness: D
  • Writing: C+

The primary "antagonist" of this game is none other than the emotionally stunted God of the Underworld, Hades. This version of Hades is a fantastic design, and as the game goes on, he really becomes transitions from what seems like a one-note character to someone with a surprising amount of depth and growth. His personification in Greek Legends and other media has always differed drastically, more so than a lot of the other Olympus Gods, but in this game specifically, Hades is just a bad dad.

As the narrative goes on, players get to see why, but that still doesn't excuse it. He also offers no Boons in comparison to almost every single other character (though he does eventually give the Sigil of the Dead Keepsake), is the main cause for most of the game's conflicts, and is the textbook example of an "overly-stubborn boomer".

16 Poseidon: The Ruler Of The Seas

Hades - Zagreus Using Poseidon's Call Ability
  • Design: A-
  • Usefulness: C+
  • Writing: C-

This is one of the most unique and enjoyable designs out there for the Ocean King. Most media like to personify Poseidon as overly serious and like a watered-down version of Zeus, but this Poseidon couldn't be more different from his lightning-touting brother. Whether it's the way his hair and beard flow like water, his unique fashion sense, or his hilarious personality.

But, sadly, his gameplay impact is what puts Poseidon this low on the list, as a lot of his Boons don't have anything to do with combat, and the ones that do rely very heavily on the knock-away and slam mechanics, which hurt more than help more often than not. Plus, while his dialog is always fun to read/hear, he doesn't really "grow" or "change" over the course of the game nearly as much as many of the other Olympic Gods do.

15 Hypnos: The Incarnation Of Sleep

Hades - PNG Of Hypnos Overlaid On Background Image Of The House Of Hades
  • Design: A
  • Usefulness: D
  • Writing: B+

Hypnos is the closest thing to a Comedic Relief character that Hades has, outside of Theseus. He’s the literal incarnation of Sleep (so technically not a "God", but he might as well be one), one of Nyx’s sons, and a professional slacker when it comes to working.

Sadly, Hypnos and his brother Thanatos don’t get along, as the latter isn’t a huge fan of the former's work ethic, but over the course of the game, this relationship develops positively in some incredibly unique and interesting ways. To be frank, he’s just an adorable and very naive guy who steadily grows and matures over the course of Zag’s many escape attempts.

As a design, Hypnos is pretty simple compared to his mother Nyx, but everything about his concept absolutely fits his "sleepyhead" theme. There's his cape which looks almost like a blanket, his eternally droopy eyes, his bed-head hairstyle, the face-like jewelry on his belt that also seems to be asleep, or even the sleep mask he always has ready for use on his forehead.

Once again, it's the gameplay integration that explains why Hypnos is this far down on this list. He is another character that doesn't give Zagreus Boons, but he does give him the Chthonic Coin Purse Keepsake, which is good for the early game, but quickly falls off once players unlock more and more Keepsakes from other characters.

14 Dionysus: The God Of Wine

Hades - Splash Art Of Dionysus For The Good Times Early Access Update
  • Design: B+
  • Usefulness: B
  • Writing: C-

Next up is Dionysus, God of Wine in this game, but he's also the God of Madness and Festivities in Greek Mythology. Design-wise, Dionysus looks amazing. The long hair, the cheetah print mantle, his hair that flows like wine, his long eyelashes that are obviously well maintained, or the clusters of grapes sprinkled on his clothes all scream “obsessed with my looks and always ready to party”.

It makes so much sense to characterize him as a down-to-earth frat-boy, given what he holds domain over. Whereas other sources of media usually go for the "overweight alcoholic" type look when it comes to Dionysus, Supergiant Games made sure to keep this iteration of the character visually appealing, since almost every single character in the game is ungodly attractive in general. As far as his personality goes, that's his biggest flaw as once the player hears one line of dialog from him, they've basically heard them all. He doesn't really grow, change, or reveal anything about himself, making him feel pretty flat in comparison to other Olympic Gods like Artemis or Hermes.

Mechanically, Dionysus is sort of a sleeper hit. Festive Fog seems bad at first glance but is incredibly when used correctly, and Hangover is the best way to passively deal damage to enemies in the entire game. Because a lot of his Boons deal with this Festive Fog, it makes him great for Boss fights as well, given that Zag can just plant this fog on the boss and lay into them with tons of debuffs on the boss and buffs on Zag.

13 Ares: The God Of War

Hades - Splash Art Of Ares Against A Black Background
  • Design: A
  • Usefulness: B-
  • Writing: C+

In comparison to Zeus' and Aphrodite's more stereotypical looks, Ares' representation in Hades feels so much more unique. The God of War is usually depicted as someone with all the physical attributes of a stereotypical lumberjack, covered in blood and full of fury, barely holding themselves together. Just look at Ares and Kratos in the God of War series to understand this design concept.

RELATED: Things We Wish We Knew Before Starting Dreamscaper

However, once this version of Ares starts talking about violence, war, and blood, players can hear him start to emote more in the voice actor's delivery, and it really drives home that this Ares is likely just as bloodthirsty, he just keeps it more "under wraps". Ares in Supergiant's world is just so refined, so kept together, however much of a facade it may be.

As far as his impact on Hades gameplay is concerned, Ares is pretty good, if not a bit one-dimensional. All of his Boons are related to:

  • Blade Rifts
  • Revenge
  • Doom
  • Or just raw Damage buffs.

And while those are all well and good, they're not really amazing as a primary build option. In fact, Ares is sort of the best Olympian God to use in order to upgrade primary Boons to even greater heights.

12 Zeus: King Of The Olympians & God Of The Skies

Hades - Splash Art Of Zeus, God Of The Skies, Against A Yellow Background
  • Design: C-
  • Usefulness: A+
  • Writing: C

The most famous (or infamous) God in the whole pantheon is none other than Zeus. Media and games tend to portray him on both sides of the moral spectrum, AKA a morally "grey" character, sort of the jolly step-dad who has a bit of a temper and a real addiction to adultery.

Hades portrays him a tad nicer than say, God of War, but the amount of shade Hades himself throws at his brother Zeus when talking about him paints a clear enough picture of the side of this character Zagreus doesn't get to see.

Frankly, he's only this high on the list because his Boons might be the all-around strongest in the game. His design is every bit as stereotypical as Aphrodite's, and his writing is never anything more than small-talk. But, every single Zeus Boon is almost unbelievably strong. He has ones that:

  • Inflict the "Jolted" status effect on enemies.
  • Stun enemies.
  • Chain lightning between enemies.
  • Or Hurt enemies based on Zag's dodges.

It's almost unfair how good his Boons are compared to some of the other Olympic Gods, but even then, that's sort of par for the course for Zeus.

11 Aphrodite: The Goddess Of Love

Hades - Splash Art Of Aphrodite Against A Pink And Black Background
  • Design: C-
  • Usefulness: S-
  • Writing: C+

Aphrodite might be the most beautiful Goddess on Olympus, but she kind of fell flat for a lot of Hades players the first time they saw her. Ares, Artemis, and most of the other God designs in Hades feel like unique spins on these classic deities. But, in comparison, this Aphrodite design is expertly made, but is conceptually very similar to a lot of other takes on the character with traits like;

  • Being naked with her hair or some small adornments covering "just enough" skin.
  • Stereotypically beautiful, like someone that would be seen on the cover of a magazine.
  • An overly flirtatious temperament that flips to over-dramatic anger at the drop of a hat.

That isn’t to say that the art for this character isn’t incredible or that she doesn’t have memorable moments of dialog, it’s just not quite as unique or memorable as the rest.

Her Boons, on the other hand, are just about as amazing as Zeus', but with more versatility and synergy overall. She has Boons that lets Zagreus take less damage, increase his Max HP earlier, charm enemies, inflict the "Weak" status on enemies, and more. And, as far as Duo Boons go, almost any Duo Boon Aphrodite is a part of is amazing.

10 Chaos: The Primordial Void

Hades - Splash Art Of Chaos From The Chaos Early Access Update
  • Design: S
  • Usefulness: S+ and/or C-
  • Writing: B

Supergiant Games really went all-in when it came to bringing lesser-known classic Greek Mythos icons to life, whether it’s the Fury Sisters, Hypnos, Asterius, or any of the other characters that aren't on center stage very often. But, it’s likely that no one out there expected them to give the literal concept of Chaos itself a physical form, or that it would be so immediately recognizable.

Chaos is the Primordial Void (again, technically not a God, but equal or greater to them in power) that Nyx and all the other Titans (such as Chronos or Gaia) rose out of, so he’s sort of like Nyx’s father. Now, as far as his impact on gameplay is concerned, Chaos is inarguably one of the stronger Boon-granting Gods in the game. Because his Boons offer great rewards in exchange for taking a great risk for a certain amount of encounters, finally “unlocking” each Boon feels more rewarding than just getting one for free from any of the Olympic Gods.

In terms of design, Chaos is incredibly well done. His design screams “beyond mortal comprehension” like some of the other Olympic God designs, yet he sticks out like a sore thumb compared to them.

The best aspect of Chaos’ design that people don't talk about enough is how you can see aspects of it in his children and grandchildren. Whether it’s the white hair he has that both Thanatos and Hypnos have, the faces on his lower section and the red jewelry and how similar they look to the accessories that both Nyx and Hypnos wear, or even just his strong and stoic facial features that all his descendants share.

9 Artemis: The Goddess Of The Hunt

Hades - Splash Art Of Artemis
  • Design: S
  • Usefulness: A
  • Writing: A+

One of the underdogs of Olympus, Artemis, Goddess of the Hunt, is a lot like Ares in that she's all about one specific thing, and that's burst damage in the form of critical hits. Basically, all of Artemis’ Boons have to do with giving Zagreus extra crit damage, "marking" enemies so that they're easier to crit, or just granting him more crit chance in general.

It’s a statistic that can be insane if it triggers often, and completely worthless if it doesn’t. But, because a lot of the weapons in Hades hit pretty rapidly (especially when upgraded using Titan's Blood), there are a ton of chances to crit throughout a run compared to other games where the weapons swing/attack a bit slower. Artemis lands squarely in the middle to the upper-middle in terms of ranking her gameplay impact compared to all the other Gods.

That said, as a character in Hades, she’s one of the best. Her design is so immediately recognizable as something related to hunting. Because she doesn’t hold domain over the sky or ocean, the other Gods look down on her a bit, so her dialogue with Zagreus shows that. She's a bit of a loner, and players can feel that in her dialog. Yet, out of all the Gods, Artemis is likely one of the most relatable and most enjoyable to talk to. And, seeing her interactions with other Olympians or just even Zagreus when she feels betrayed by him is so interesting and different from the rest.

8 Hermes: The God Of Swiftness

Hades - Splash Art Of Hermes For The High Speed Early Access Update
  • Design: A-
  • Usefulness: S
  • Writing: S-

Players probably weren’t expecting someone like Hermes to be near the top of the list, but there are actually quite a few reasons he deserves this spot.

  1. He's a likable character on his own, a bit over-excited, but generally relatable and kind to Zagreus overall.
  2. There are a bunch of little implications sprinkled throughout multiple conversations that he has more to do with the story of Hades than it would first appear.
  3. His Boons are fantastic.

But, are his Boons really good enough to Why are they so good? Well, it comes down to three things:

  • Utility: Hermes can sort of let Zagreus "double-up" on Boons buffing a specific attack, whereas other Olympic Gods can't.
  • Dependability: No matter which Hermes Boon is chosen, it will positively impact the rest of the run.
  • Creativity: His Boons change the way people play the rest of their run thanks to massively increasing attack speed, giving players the Sturdy buff, or even giving them Dodge Chance.

Seriously, just his "Greatest Reflex" Boon alone makes the game easier by an entire level, simply because it gives Zagreus one more Dash to work with. Then there's his Keepsake, the Lambent Plume, which can "dependably" buff Zagreus’ innate speed and dodge chance a ton if players focus on clearing rooms quickly. To put it bluntly, this speedy God is sort of the complete package.

7 Demeter: The Goddess Of Seasons

Hades - Splash Art Of Demeter For The Long Winter Early Access Update
  • Design: S-
  • Usefulness: S
  • Writing: A+

Some might forget how powerful Demeter is since she tends to get relegated to the "Goddess of Harvest" more often than not. But, this seasonal Goddess has control over life and death itself. She’s Zeus’ sister after all, and one of the oldest Goddesses in the pantheon. Her design is one of the least "stereotypically attractive" in the game, making it one of the more creative as well, as it meshes perfectly with the wisdom she imparts onto Zagreus while also making her stick out in the player's minds as someone different from the rest.

In-game, she acts as a sort of standoffish grandmother to Zag, who really warms up to him the further her Bond progresses. She, like Athena, is pretty standoffish and cold, but players can immediately feel her intention through her voice acting, and she does have a character arc over the course of the game.

Mechanically, her Boons are top-notch. The “Chill” status effect, in particular, is one of the best for a few reasons:

  • It slows enemies more and more, up to a max of 10 stacks, making it incredibly for Boss fights.
  • Players commonly take a lot of damage in Hades simply due to them getting lost in the chaotic flow of a packed room, the Chill status helps slow everything down.
  • And lastly, it just does a fair amount of damage as well.

Plus, Demeter's Boons are much more versatile than say Ares' or Artemis'. In particular, the “Rare Crop” Boon, is worth its weight in gold.

6 Persephone: The Queen Of The Underworld

Hades - Talking To Persephone In Her Garden Outside Of The Underworld
  • Design: S-
  • Usefulness: A
  • Writing: S+

Yes, Persephone does show up in the game, and her depiction in Hades is really inventive. It's not how players expected her to look, talk, or act. Usually, film and game media loves to portray Kore (her real name) as the naive and sheltered daughter of Demeter who is overly energetic and woefully naive, but Supergiant decided to make Persephone a dependable, independent, and very capable Goddess.

RELATED: Great Games That Are Better On Switch (According To Metacritic)

Frankly, in terms of character and design, Kore should be higher, but sadly, she doesn't offer any Boons so that's sort of a big mark against her. That said, she does offer something amazing to Zagreus, The Pom Blossom, her very own Keepsake that is easily top-tier compared to the other Keepsakes. It's a shame she doesn't give it to Zag until the last 20-30% of the game, but still. Oh, and let's not forget her second "design" she gets later, which only serves to show both her authority and versatility.

5 Thanatos: The Incarnation Of Death

Hades - Splash Art Of Thanatos For The Murder, Death, Kill Early Access Update
  • Design: S+
  • Usefulness: B+
  • Writing: S+

Thanatos is the Greek Version of the Grim Reaper, simple as that. Some people might think Hades fits that role better, but he’s more like the Grim Reaper's boss who’s always stuck behind a desk. Due to him growing up with Zagreus, the two have a very deep bond, which means Thanatos gets more opportunities throughout the game for characterization and growth. Honestly, his relationship with Zagreus and Megara is one of the sweetest things in this game, and it only gets better the further players get in the story.

Supergiant Games did a fantastic job writing a believable character arc for the collector of souls. Thanatos steadily opens up and connects more to the people around him, whether it's his mother Nyx, his brother Hypnos, or especially Zagreus.

Thanatos is another character that doesn’t grant any Boons, but he does have his own type of “encounter” found throughout Zagreus’ escape attempts. Basically, whenever Than is found in a run, it becomes a competition between him and Zag to see who can kill more enemies within a span of time. If Zagreus wins, he gets a Centaur Heart; if Thanatos wins, Zag gets nothing. Now, comparing a small Max HP buff to the Boons the Olympic Gods give out isn't fair. Thankfully, Thanatos also has a Keepsake (The Pierced Butterfly) and a Chthonic Companion (The Companion "Mort") that he gives to Zagreus, both of which are incredibly useful.

4 Athena: The Goddess Of Wisdom

Hades - Splash Art Of Athena Against A Black Background
  • Design: S+
  • Usefulness: S+
  • Writing: A+

Athena's design in Hades is superb. It's completely unique and yet, such a perfect representation of the Goddess of Wisdom, War, and Strategy. The armor, the elegant hairstyle, the shield-shaped earrings, her armor that mixes both practicality and aesthetic, and even her power stance all add up to create an amazing design greater than the sum of its parts. Plus, her Boons are inarguably the best in the game overall.

Athena specializes in the “Deflect” status effect, which reflects attacks back on enemies, both avoiding damage and inflicting damage at the same time. Frankly, even if this list was only taking her Divine Dash Boon into account, Athena would still be near the top, it's just that good of a Boon. Plus, Athena:

  • Can add the "Deflect" buff to all of Zag's actions.
  • Decreases the damage he takes overall or from traps specifically.
  • And is one of the rare Gods that actually gives Zag more Death Defiances within a single run.

Really, her only flaw is how flawless she is, making her sort of a boring character in comparison to a lot of the others. But even then, she does steadily grow with the other Gods, and her dialog is always interesting to read.

3 Nyx: The Incarnation Of Night

Hades - Talking To Nyx In The Hall Of Hades
  • Design: S+
  • Usefulness: S
  • Writing: S+

Zag’s second mom, the character every player wishes was their mom, the literal incarnation of night, and the original ruler of the Underworld before Zeus gave the title to Hades. Now, sadly, Nyx doesn’t have any boons to offer Zagreus, but she does have the Black Shawl Keepsake that she gives to Zagreus.

As a design, Nyx is by far one of the best is in Hades. The cosmos patterning in her head shawl, her strong but elegant facial features, the crescent moon-shaped shoulder accessories, it all just works so well. Frankly, out of the entire cast, Nyx looks the classiest.

And, as far as her characterization is concerned, Nyx is flawless like Athena, yet still somehow has one of the best character arcs overall. She just seems like a complex character, a fantastic worker, and a great mother to just about all of her children. It says quite a lot that even Hades himself listens to Nyx without argument most of the time and she’s certainly one of the most powerful, likable, and memorable characters Supergiant has ever created.

2 Charon: The Boatman Of The Underworld

Hades - Splash Art Of Charon For The Blood Price Early Access Update
  • Design: S
  • Usefulness: S+
  • Writing: S+

Ah, Charon, another one of the fan-favorite characters of the game who is surprisingly lovable and empathetic given his overall imposing appearance. Charon is the Boatman of the Underworld, as well as the NPC who runs the shop Zag can use throughout runs. At first, it may seem like Charon is weak compared to the other deities Zag meets in the Underworld, but dialog from many characters of the House of Hades reinforces the fact that this boatman is exceedingly strong.

He’s another one of Nyx’s children, though he doesn’t seem to be an incarnation of any concept like Sleep, Night, or Death. Instead, Charon is just a reliable worker that everyone in the Underworld (and even some on Olympus) heavily depend on. And, he seems to care deeply for Zagreus, which only gets cuter the further along a player gets in the storyline and reveals all the things Charon has done for them.

Now, as far as gameplay is concerned, Charon sort of does it all. He’s a Merchant, an optional boss fight, owner of the Well of Charon, and giver of the Bone Hourglass Keepsake. He really does contribute to the game in just about every way possible, making him one of the best characters in the game, both mechanically and narratively.

1 Zagreus: The God Of...Escaping?

Hades - Still Frame Of Zagreus From The Intro Cinematic After He Beats The Bone Hydra
  • Design: S+
  • Usefulness: S+
  • Writing: S+

Zagreus, the game's big protagonist, is a God, too. Of what, however, even he's not sure yet, but he absolutely counts as one. Mythos states that Zag is the God of Rebirth and Blood, and that makes sense considering the actual structure of the game as a roguelike. He’s also an interesting character that actively grows, adapts, and changes throughout the course of the story.

This is especially unique because, if there’s one thing people know about the Olympic Gods, it’s that they’re stubborn and unchanging. His accent, line delivery, and the absurd amount of reactions he has to every situation also make him so innately charming that players might just fall in love with him as a character without even realizing it.
