When fans tuned in to The Game Awards 2019, it's safe to say that no one expected to see a PlayStation 5 game. However, fans were treated to their first look at the first-confirmed PlayStation 5 console exclusive title in Godfall, which is developed by Counterplay Games and published by Gearbox. The so-called looter-slasher was revealed with a CGI trailer that set up the game world and general tone of the game, but the developer has since released a GIF that offers a look at the combat.

The Godfall combat GIF shows what appears to be two players working cooperatively against a hulking, knighted enemy armed with a huge hammer. The player character gets caught by the enemy and face-slammed onto the ground while their partner swings their sword helplessly. What appears to be another enemy can be seen in the background. The GIF does a good job of showing off Godfall's next-generation visuals, with especially smooth animations on full display, though it's light on other details.

While the GIF is light on details, we know from it that Godfall will focus on co-op gameplay and melee combat. With Godfall being a looter-slasher, players will be able to acquire a wide variety of interesting weapons during their time with the game. These include highly-detailed swords, spears, hammers, and more. Beyond weapons, it seems likely that Godfall will also let players collect armor and customization options by looting as well.

It's hard to say with certainty when we'll see more of Godfall, but with the game aiming for a late 2020 release date, more information should be made available in the coming months. Maybe Sony will feature Godfall when it decides to unveil the PlayStation 5 design, or maybe the company will show it off at E3 2020, assuming it attends next year's big event. Alternatively, Gearbox Publishing may decide to show off Godfall independently throughout the year.

With Sony now doing Nintendo Direct-like State of Play presentations, more on Godfall could really come at any point next year. Fans will just have to stay tuned to learn more about the upcoming PS5 console exclusive looter-slasher.

Godfall launches in late 2020 for PC and PS5.
