The announcement of new IP Godfall has set the internet abuzz wondering what the game will be like. To get a clearer picture of what to expect, it may help to look at the game's developer: Counterplay Games.

For those not in the know, Godfall is a new AAA title coming to PS5 and PC in 2020. It's developed by Counterplay Games, and its first trailer appeared in The Game Awards 2019.

Counterplay Games is a 75 person team with a diverse background in video game development. Its website describes the team as tight-knit, with developing credentials in games like the Ratchet & Clank series, Titanfall 2God of WarDestiny 2, Diablo 3, Star Wars Battlefront, and Overwatch, just to name a few. It's safe to say it has experience with games of high quality, on par with what it wants Godfall to be.

Counterplay Games' first game, Duelyst is a digital CCG similar to Hearthstone, but played on a multi-square grid with creatures that actively traverse the board. The game drew praise for its easy to learn, many ways to master gameplay. Its beautiful pixel art style and engaging mechanics, along with steadily revealed compelling lore quickly grew it a dedicated following, continuing even to this day.

The credentials of Counterplay Games' team is certainly nothing to sneeze at. Not only have the members of the company worked on quality games in the past, they have worked on games that cover a wide spectrum, from cartoony, lighthearted platformers, to serious, grand epics, both multiplayer and singleplayer. Their pedigree does trend towards third person action titles, so a slasher-looter like Godfall being a big success is well within the realm of possibility.

However, Counterplay's other title, Duelyst, has been seemingly neglected by the team, with no new content since 2017. It is possible that the effort of Counterplay has been funneled into Godfall, but it is also possible that it has begun chasing the next fad, shifting from digital card games to action looters. It may be too much to hope that Duelyst will see any more love from its creators, and it is too soon to speculate on Godfall without seeing gameplay. Many hope to see new content for Duelyst, but with the release of Godfall scheduled for next year's holiday season, it is unlikely that Counterplay will be able to dedicate any time to its first child.
