Released as a launch title for the PS5, Godfall is an action-RPG developed by Counterplay Games. Although expectations were high for this title, many gamers have felt that it has failed to meet expectations or show off the next-gen power of the PS5. Godfall may be getting a second chance to wow gamers with its inclusion in December 2021's PlayStation Plus lineup. However, the version gamers will be getting differs significantly from the version released at launch.

Godfall: Challenger Edition is designed to leapfrog gamers into the late stage of the game, allowing them to enjoy certain perks without having to grind their way there. For those who are on the fence about Godfall, it may be a good way to get a feel of the game. While many will appreciate the streamlined gameplay, for some it may seem like a disappointingly stripped-down version of the game.

Godfall features three endgame modes: Lightbringer, Dreamstones, and Ascended Tower of Trials. Lightbringer has players battling against all-consuming darkness. As players progress and take on hordes, they can unlock greater rewards. Dreamstone lets players relive the memories of Orin and partake in randomized encounters, and Ascended Tower of Trials has players facing fierce bosses as they undergo a grueling ascent to the top of the tower.

Godfall: Challenger Edition will feature new cosmetics for players to unlock, as well as a quest system that provides new challenges which offer up legendary rewards. Fortunately, the edition will available for free for players who already own Godfall. The endgame co-op will also be compatible with all versions of Godfall, and it will support cross-gen play on PS4 and PS5.

Gamers will be able to jump straight into the endgame modes. They will also have the ability to leap straight to Player Level 50, giving them access to an array of skill points and weapons. For gamers wanting to enjoy the combat of Godfall without starting at the bottom, the Challenger Edition may seem attractive.

The Challenger Edition of Godfall will not feature the singleplayer, story content of the base game. Furthermore, it will not contain Godfall's Fire & Darkness expansion. The Fire & Darkness expansion was released in August, and it expands Godfall's story by adding new story missions. It also introduces the new Fire Realm to explore, as well as new Dreamstone missions set in the Fire Realm.

For some, Godfall: Challenger Edition may seem like a mere demo meant to entice players to purchase the full game. With the story-mode content missing, there is a significant portion of the game that has been removed. This could also be upsetting to PlayStation Plus subscribers who may view the Challenger Edition as a subpar version of Godfall being given to subscribers. Others, however, may be grateful that they can enjoy Godfall's impactful combat and jump quickly to Player Level 50 without having to suffer through an arduous grind. The Challenger Edition could also go a long way to introducing more players to the game and expanding the player base.

Gamers who download Godfall: Challenger Edition and later decide that they love the game and want to experience everything it has to offer have the ability to upgrade to the Deluxe Edition. This edition contains the full version of Godfall as well as the Fire & Darkness expansion. For PlayStation Plus subscribers who are not interested in Godfall, December's lineup also features Mortal Shell and Lego DC Super Villain.

Godfall: Challenger Edition will be available for free for PlayStation Plus subscribers from December 7 until January 3.
