Kotaku has a great interview with Stig Asmussen, director of the God of War trilogy, in the latest Kotaku Talk Radio. Specifically, they ask him some interesting questions about any cuts they had to make for in God of War 3. Stig talked about how the multiple Titan encounters in the final episode in the trilogy required so much time and resources that the work was overwhelming.

The team was forced to make some tough decisions, as you can see from this quote:

"There was a pretty large thing that we chopped from the ending that I had regrets about, but then something we added at the end that helps make up for it a little bit, and helps make it more personal." ... "We had Titan encounters in the game, we had a pretty big one planned for the end and we got pretty far with it it, but it was just one of those deals where we just had so much."

Asmussen goes on about releasing the cut content through some sort of DLC:

"As far as DLC goes, it might be something we might think about getting out there someday," ... "The pieces are in place, the idea is written. If it's something we put out there it would be something that would be free."

Free is a nice thought, but I have a hard time imagining the God of War team putting the extra effort into the project if there's not additional recompense. Still, Asmussen seems honestly disappointed that the content had to be cut, and if the director wants it out there then we can probably count on it.

A final quote about how difficult a decision it was for Asmussen:

"Those things required so many resources and they're so hard to work on. It was literally the hardest thing I've ever been involved with before in my life and we just couldn't do more. We couldn't," ... "It was to the point where we had to remove one just to invest time in the other ones that we had in the game, to get those right. We could have had more, and everything else would have suffered."

Now I won't be able to judge the ending of the God of War trilogy without wondering what it could, or should have been. It's interesting to me that the team cut a portion of an ending to the entire trilogy, rather than some section in the middle of the game with less impact on the plot. Then again, how could you ever prioritize them? I'll trust that Asmussen and his team made God of War 3 the best they could.

Well God of War fans, is this a depressing revelation? Would you be interested in seeing an epilogue released as DLC? And make sure and look forward to our God of War 3 review in the coming days.
