WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS FOR GOD OF WAR RAGNAROK AHEADBoth God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok try their best to distance Kratos from his old personality. As the video game poster boy for selfish ambitions and anger management issues for more than a decade, Kratos needed to mature in order to connect with the rapidly-changing times. This is why Kratos is so adamant about avoiding conflict and keeping his temper in check in the newer games.

His dislike for gods and violence isn't unwarranted. Once thought of as a mortal, Kratos was tricked by the former Greek god of war Ares into murdering his wife and child. This snowballed into a series of events that led Kratos to defy impossible odds all in the name of pinning his troubles on someone else. Though Kratos continues his streak of maturity and willingness to learn in God of War Ragnarok, there is another unlikely character that follows Kratos' previous path of vengeance.

A Brotherly Pair Of Dwarves

Brok and Sindri in God of War

Sindri makes up one-half of the Huldra Brothers - a pair of dwarven siblings that make their names crafting all sorts of mythological items, weapons, and armor for their customers. Along with his brother Brok, Sindri's claim to fame is Thor's hammer Mjolnir. The two also created Laufey's Leviathan Axe, a frost-based weapon that Laufey passed on to her husband Kratos after her death.

Due to a myriad of disagreements, the two brothers start out separated in 2018's God of War. Brok's down-and-dirty approach to smithing stands as the polar opposite of Sindri's meticulous and over-hygenic practice of his craft. But thanks to Kratos, Atreus, and the brothers' own willingness to talk things through, they eventually make up and resume working together again. This mutual respect carries over into God of War Ragnarok, as Brok and Sindri provide Kratos and his allies with a wide assortment of gear, resources, weapons, and armor to create and customize.

Sindri's Quest for Vengeance

Things take a turn for the worse toward the end of Kratos and Atreus' latest journey. After having amassed allies from the nine Norse realms, Kratos and Atreus begin plotting an attack on Odin. As the group thinks of a plan to get into Asgard, a rescued Tyr suddenly brings up knowledge of a secret passage into the realm of the Asgardians. Brok finds Tyr's information fishy and starts questioning his motives. Unfortunately, it turns out that this Tyr was none other than Odin himself. Odin reveals his true form, but not before fatally stabbing Brok. Sindri, devastated by his brother's death, leaves the group with Brok's body.

When Kratos and Atreus find Sindri in Tyr's Temple, he is a changed dwarf. Sindri has shed his protective gloves in anger, instead relying on his bare hands to create a sword with which he will use to fight Odin's forces in Ragnarok. Filled with anger and grief, Sindri tells Kratos and Atreus that they are no longer family as they did nothing to stop Odin from killing Brok. All his efforts are now focused solely on killing Odin and getting revenge.

Sindri appears during Ragnarok as the only dwarf in the cataclysmic war. Despite promising his old friends that he would rally the dwarves of Svartalfheim, Sindri says that no more dwarves need to die for Odin's ambitions. He reluctantly aids Atreus in breaking down Asgard's mighty walls before disappearing once more. The angry dwarf reappears again after Atreus captures Odin in a soul stone. He takes Odin's soul from Atreus and smashes it to pieces with his hammer. With his vengeance complete, Sindri disappears.

Sindri's final appearance is at Brok's funeral in Svartalfheim. Ragged and tired, he takes one last look at his brother's corpse before saying a short eulogy. Freya then shoots an arrow that burns Brok's funeral boat, sinking it to the bottom of the water. Sindri then disappears one final time, never to be seen again.

A Second Kratos

Kratos and Lysandra

Just like Kratos before him, Sindri is consumed by grief and rage. He directs his anger at those closest to him for not being able to save Brok, all while avoiding the blame himself. He becomes determined to get revenge on Odin just like Kratos grew obsessed with killing Ares and Zeus. Just like Kratos before him, Sindri feels only emptiness once he completes his goal.

It is unknown if Sindri will ever reappear in future God of War content, but he deserves more than just a hollow victory. Players need to know if the character they fell in love with gets closure or continues down a dark and lonely path. It wouldn't feel right for Sindri of all characters to end up miserable, as his friends all understand his plight and want nothing more for him to find solace.

God of War Ragnarok is available now for PS4 and PS5.
