While Kratos has a few ranged attacks at his disposal in God of War Ragnarok, the ranged attacks of his companions make up a huge part of the player's combat and puzzle-solving repertoire. As players progress throughout the game, they unlock a couple of arrow types that have different effects and impacts for puzzle solving.

Ultimately, there are two types of Runic Arrows in God of War Ragnarok: Sonic Arrows and Sigil Arrows. Players will unlock the two at different points of the game, with Runic arrows serving as the all-encompassing term for both. Sonic Arrows are color-coded a blue-ish green color, while Sigil Arrows are a bright pinkish color. Using these effectively and swapping between them are necessary for God of War Ragnarok's combat, as well as to solve various puzzles encountered across the realms.

Sonic arrows are used on green-hued soundstone to break them, opening up areas for puzzles, or can be used in combat to push around enemies. Sonic Arrows are really helpful in building up an enemy's stun meter, allowing for devastating damage once it is filled. Sigil Arrows are a type of magical arrow that is equally helpful for stun meters, but more importantly, they combine with the frost damage of the Leviathan Axe, the fire damage of the Blades of Chaos, and other elemental effects to increase said damage. In puzzles, Sigil Arrows can be used to make fiery or icy explosions, get these elements to areas they need to be, or used on purple, reflective stone to hit odd angles. Therefore, it's important to keep in mind how to change them: players must press UP on the d-pad to have the arrow type change in God of War Ragnarok.

In the midst of combat, it's important to keep this detail in mind. It's easy to hit this when changing Kratos' weapons, not realizing they should be using a different arrow type, or it's also pretty easy to forget. This may be because the arrow type and stock are on the right side of the screen, while the d-pad is on the left side of the PS4 or PS5 controller. This can create a small amount of confusion in the hands, especially while there is so much going on in the game.

Either way, this should help players understand what their arrows do and how to change them, as they explore various locations in God of War Ragnarok.

God of War Ragnarok is available now for PS4 and PS5.
