Proceed at your own risk.God of War Ragnarok marks the end of the Norse saga in the series and allows the story of Kratos and Atreus’ time here to go out with a bang. From epic fights and humorous conversations to beautiful scenery and a heart-warming ending, the game neatly wraps things up while leaving some room for a possible future game in the series. With the large cast that was present in God of War Ragnarok, it seems difficult to pinpoint who the best characters in the game were; however, both Freya and Freyr had vital roles throughout and remained memorable even after the credits rolled.

The two Vanir twins, Freya and Freyr, have always had a rivalry with Odin in the God of War series. In mythology, though, they are both regarded as trusted allies to the All-Father. In fact, their roles in Ragnarok are extremely different between God of War and Norse mythology, with Freya not even featuring in the epic event in mythology. In God of War Ragnarok, they both deliver vital assistance to Kratos and Atreus, even though Freya sought to kill Kratos at the start.

How Freya’s Role Differs From Mythology

God of War Ragnarok Freya Cover character

Freya is one of the few gods that played a large role in 2018’s God of War as an ally to Kratos and Atreus on their journey to the highest peak in all the realms. Following the death of her son Baldur by Kratos, however, Freya swore to get revenge. At the start of God of War Ragnarok, she is a dangerous enemy that is constantly trying to find a way to take out the Ghost of Sparta. Eventually, she is able to sympathize with Kratos, who had also lost a child in the past, and put her need for revenge to the side in order to take out a much larger threat, Odin.

In mythology, Freya’s most notable act was teaching witchcraft to the Aesir gods after she was married to Odin. She is the goddess of love, attraction, and fertility, and also picks half of the fallen warriors into her domain, Folkvangr. Freja is absent during the events of Ragnarok that ultimately take the lives of many of the gods, including her twin brother Freyr.

Freyr is a much more prominent figure in mythology and is one of the gods that is destined to die during the events of Ragnarok. Like his twin sister, he is a Vanir god who was eventually accepted by the Aesir and welcomed to Asgard where he was worshipped as the god of peace, fertility, rain, and sunshine. During the events of Ragnarok, Freyr fights the fire giant Surtr and is ultimately killed, ending his story in Norse mythology.

In God of War Ragnarok, Freyr plays a much more direct role in causing the events of Ragnarok and overthrowing the Asgardian rule over the nine realms. He is responsible for bringing the dark and light elves together to form an army that assists Kratos and Atreus during their fight in Asgard and has devoted his entire life to taking out Odin and saving his sister, Freya. Freyr ultimately sacrifices himself by holding the embodiment of Ragnarok off while his allies escape the destruction of Asgard.

Both Freya and Freyr represent the power and beauty of Vanaheim in Norse mythology and God of War, playing vital roles, albeit with many differences in the two iterations of them. In Mythology, they are proud members of the Aesir with Freyr even giving his life fighting against the forces of Loki and the giants; however, in God of War Ragnarok, they are siblings that assist Kratos and persevere through the countless years of Odin’s rule together. Through Freyr’s sacrifice and the journey of acceptance that Freya went on, God of War Ragnarok does a great job of portraying these Vanir gods.

God of War Ragnarok is available now for PS4 and PS5.
