God of War Ascension Collectors Edition

Santa Monica Studio and Sony are probably still enjoying the positive buzz that their showing of God of War: Ascension at E3 2012 managed to generate, but details on the game are still leaking regardless. Specifically, the goodies that will be included in the Collector's Edition of the game, revealed through Amazon's official listing.

The bonus content may not be some of the most striking or game-changing that we've recently seen, but serious fans of the God of War series will no doubt be interested.

The developers of Ascension don't exactly need to do much convincing with their special editions of the game to sell copies. The franchise is still one of the biggest the PS3 has ever seen, and even if the game hadn't impressed so much at E3, the inclusion of multiplayer should do all the convincing that's needed. Sure slaying endless enemies as Kratos as fun, but only this game will let you do it alongside - and up against - your friends.

Still, the special items packed into the God of War: Ascension Collector's Edition range from expected to promising, even if images have ye to be revealed. The special edition will include:

  • Exclusive 8" Kratos Statue
  • Premium Steelbook case
  • Official Game Soundtrack (digital version)
  • PS3 Dynamic Theme
  • PSN Avatar Pack
  • Multiplayer Double XP Unlock
  • Pass for future DLC content

The statue of Kratos and Steelbook case (seriously, no love for Deimos?) will surely be coveted to adorn the mantelpiece of many a God of War junkie, but it's hard to be completely sold without an idea of exactly how much time and effort has been put into them. While much of the PSN content is almost expected at this point, the 'Pass for future DLC' is intriguing.

In all probability the bullet-point refers only to a map pack or expansion code included with the game, and not as wide-ranging as the 'season passes' which are currently being implemented industry-wide. While some might shrug to see any multiplayer perks taking the place of other real-world items, the 'double XP' actually should offer a real bonus.

And considering that many players might actually spend as much time in multiplayer areneas as the singleplayer campaign, if not more, multiplayer bonuses here mean quite a bit more. Heck, even the creator of the series thinks the mode looks promising.

God of War: Ascension releases March 12, 2013 exclusively for PlayStation 3.
