God of War Ragnarok's seventeenth chapter, The Realms at War, takes place after Kratos and Areus' trip to Muspelheim, where they received some much-needed help from Sutr. In preparation for the battle to come, Kratos decides to rest, but he doesn't get the peaceful slumber he was hoping for.

His sleep is interrupted by a dream, in which he meets Faye. After following her for a short distance, the player will need to help her add paint to the surrounding trees by swiping to the right on the Touchpad. Once the scene ends, the seventeenth chapter of God of War Ragnarok begins.

Travel To Asgard

Inside Tyr's Temple, Kratos can upgrade his equipment at Lunda's shop. When the player is ready to leave, they can proceed into the previously inaccessible room to the west, where Kratos must interact with the crystal at the far end of the room. After a short cutscene, Kratos will sound Gjallarhorn, thus summoning Ragnarok.

Finding The War Machines

Kratos faces an Einherjar in God of War Ragnarok

Once he and his comrades reach Asgard, Kratos will set off to find the War Machines with Freya. Passing the Einherjar, Kratos will be forced into a battle against a Dodher Wyvern. Once it has been defeated, the way passed the rubble will open. Making use of the environment can be extremely helpful while pressing forward, as most enemies can be defeated by hitting them off ledges.

Kratos approaches an Einherjar Captain and an Ogre in God of War Ragnarok

The next notable encounter pits Kratos up against an Einherjar Captain and an Ogre. Freya will prove to be extremely useful during this battle, so the player should command her to fire her arrows by pressing Square. The trick to beating these foes is to stay on the attack. If the player is struggling, they can retreat behind the obstacle at the center of the arena to get some space.

Kratos finds a Healthstone in God of War Ragnarok

Once the battle is won, Kratos should make use of the Healthstones in the area if he is low on health. Moving on, the Blades of Chaos must be used to destroy the barricade blocking the path forward.

Kratos faces a Dodher Gradungr in God of War Ragnarok

After defeating the Einherjar along the next path, Kratos will reconvene with Atreus. Together, they set off to reach the Svartaflheim Tower. An Einherjar mounting a Dodher Gradungr appears in the next area and must be defeated for Kratos and Atreus to progress. Knocking the Einherjar off his mount will prevent the Gradungr from regenerating, so this should be the player's first move.

A dragon overlooks Asgard in God of War Ragnarok

Kratos should defeat the Gradungr as quickly as possible, as a dragon will join the fight toward the end. To stop the dragon, the Draupnir Spear must be thrown at the Gold Crack on the pillar it's perched on. Doing so will cause the structure to crumble, permitting Fenrir to deal the finishing blow.

Protect The Refugees

Kratos and Atreus in God of War Ragnarok

Sindri joins the party in the next area before the group marches forward. After a cutscene, the player will take control of Atreus as he ventures forth with Sindri. Once the Gulons and the Einherjar in the next area have been vanquished, the duo will enter the next area where Atreus transforms into a bear. Defeating the Einherjar here is easy, thanks to Atreus' shape-shifting ability.

Atreus aims his bow at Hrimthur's Wall in God of War Ragnarok

After reaching the next area, a lengthy cutscene will play. Once it ends, Atreus must use his bow to fire arrows at the crack in the wall in front of him by mashing R2.

Find Odin

Kratos faces an Einherjar in God of War Ragnarok

The player will take control of Kratos once Atreus breaches Hrimthir's Wall. To progress, Kratos and his comrades must make their way through the opening left behind in the wall's collapse. Another group of Einherjar attacks in the next area, but Kratos has plenty of friends to help him out in the battle.

Kratos spots the Great Lodge in God of War Ragnarok

The way forward is crawling with enemies, but they pose little challenge now that Thrud has joined the party. Eventually, after defeating several enemy groups, Kratos will reach a small wall overlooking the Great Lodge. Before climbing over, it would be wise to save the game.

Defeat Thor

Kratos faces Thor in God of War Ragnarok

Upon climbing into the next area, Kratos gets attacked by Thor, who carries the god of war to the Great Lodge. Though Kratos does not wish to fight, Thor refuses to listen and, instead, launches an attack.

Thor can unleash a variety of deadly attacks, but some are harder to avoid than others. He can throw his axe at a terrifying speed, so the player should prepare to dodge the moment he launches a red attack. He can also do a similar attack where he leaps into the air before hurling his axe at Kratos. To dodge this, the player must wait until the moment he releases the axe from his hand.

He can also smash his axe, Mjolnir, into the ground. This attack will create several red circles around the arena that Kratos must avoid. Even if a circle appears under his feet, he has plenty of time to dodge before it explodes. Thor is vulnerable at the end of this move, so if the player manages to avoid getting hit, they should launch an attack.

His three-hit combo must be dodged, blocked, and dodged again to leave him open. It's one of his slowest attacks, so the player should try their best to take advantage of it when they want to strike back.

Once three of Thor's health bars have been depleted, he will enter his second phase. To parry his first attack, the player should approach him and rapidly tap R1. He can also use his axe to teleport before attacking. The best way to avoid this is for Kratos to start running the moment Thor disappears.

Thor grabs Kratos by the neck in God of War Ragnarok

When Thor has three health bars remaining, he will grab Kratos by the neck. The player must mash Circle until Kratos breaks free, where the third phase of the battle will commence. Thor unleashes his full strength during this part of the battle, but most of his moves remain the same.

To survive this phase, the player must ensure that Kratos avoids all the glowing red circles around the arena, as they can do some serious damage. Like the previous phases, taking advantage of his more predictable moves is the best way to take him down.

Once only one health bar remains, the player will need to partake in a quick time event, where mashing R1 and R2 will deal the final blows. A cutscene plays once the quick-time event ends. Next, Kratos and Atreus will fight Odin.

Odin's First Battle

Kratos faces Odin in God of War Ragnarok

Odin lunges his spear at Kratos for his first attack. Upon dodging each lunge, he will be vulnerable. It's important not to get greedy during these openings, as he can perform a devastating AOE attack if he is hit too much. The best way to avoid this move is to dodge out of the way.

He can also fire purple beams at Kratos from his spear; these can either be blocked or dodged. When he ascends into the sky to unleash his red attack, the player should prepare to dodge as the beam he unleashes is quite powerful. The moment the beam stops, Kratos can attack.

When three of Odin's health bars have been depleted, he will lunge his spear into the ground, marking the beginning of his next phase. This is his most dangerous move, as there is no way to dodge it, but it can be parried if Kratos blocks at the right moment. The battle arena gets a little smaller during this part of the battle, making it more difficult to avoid Odin's attacks.

He uses most of the same attacks as he did in the previous phase, but some have been slightly altered. When he ascends into the air to unleash his red attack, the player should prepare to dodge twice. They should also do the same for the purple beams he fires from his spear. He only performs these attacks while he is outside the battle arena.

Once Odin's health bar has been depleted, a cutscene will play in which Freya confronts him. When the cutscene ends, Odin will begin his second attack.

Odin's Second Battle

Kratos faces Odin in God of War Ragnarok

To avoid getting struck by Odin's whip, Kratos must dodge just as it swings toward him. When Odin warps to the opposite side of the arena, the player must prepare to dodge, as he will soon be sending an army of crows in Kratos' direction. If he lands this attack, Kratos' vision will become impaired.

Kratos can parry Odin when the area surrounding him begins to glow purple. It's a great way to punish him, but the player needs to be quick if they want to avoid getting caught in the blast. His three-hit combo now ends with an unblockable whip slash. If Kratos manages to dodge it, Odin will be vulnerable.

The next new move he performs sees him summoning five fireballs. To prevent them from moving, the player must command Atreus to shoot them by tapping Square, leaving Odin open to attack.

Kratos, Atreus, and Freya face Odin in God of War Ragnarok

Once enough damage has been dealt, Odin will begin his second phase. He will protect himself in an elemental shield, so the player will need to choose the correct weapons to attack with; the Leviathan Axe should be used when he shields himself with fire, and the Blades of Chaos should be used when he shields himself with ice.

The only new attack he performs in this phase sees him projecting various elements around the arena. To avoid getting injured by these, the player should do their best to avoid the red circles on the floor. The way these circles align permits Kratos just enough room to reach Odin, where he can attack.

Kratos should dodge whenever Odin summons his book, as he will either unleash a projectile beam that must be dodged through or he will unleash a powerful AOE attack before shielding him with a different element.

Once Odin has only one health bar remaining, the player must complete a quick time event to deal the finishing blow.

Find Father

Kratos, Angrboda, Fenrir, and Atreus in God of War Ragnarok

After a lengthy cutscene, Atreus will awaken at the Hoddmimis Holt, where he sets out to find Kratos. The path to the right leads to a dead end, so the only way forward is to climb the stairs to the left. On the way, he will encounter several of the friends he met throughout his journey before reconvening with Angrboda and Fenrir. When the cutscene ends, the player will take control of Kratos.

Follow Angrboda

Kratos and Freya in God of War Ragnarok

Angrboda leads Kratos and Atreus outside the Holt, where they find another prophecy. When the cutscene ends, Kratos, Freya, and Mimir can return to where Atreus woke up and proceed outside. Once they reach the other side of the door, Kratos will be able to begin the Last Remnants of Asgard side quest. Then, the chapter will end.
