The team behind the God of War franchise is seemingly on the hunt for people to help create the next entry in the franchise. Santa Monica Studios, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony, released God of War Ragnarok in November 2022, capping off the story started in the 2018 God of War game.

Although it missed out on the coveted Game of the Year award to Elden Ring, God of War Ragnarok was a critical hit when it hit the shelves for PS5 and PS4. Praise was levied at the rich narrative, distinct characters, and engaging combat. Now it seems Santa Monica is wanting to quickly build on that success by beginning the recruitment process for what is expected to be the next entry in a franchise that started life in 2005 on the PlayStation 2.

According to a recent job listing on Santa Monica’s website, the Sony-owned studio looks to be on the lookout for developers to join the team for the next God of War entry. The listing is for a Senior Combat Designer to companions; a mechanic that was first introduced in God of War Ragnarok where players could unlock skills for Kratos’ companion to help with battling tough enemies. The successful candidate is expected to have at least 4 years of experience in developing games and be able to talk in-depth about combat systems, mechanics, and enemies.

The listing itself may be for a wholly new combat-based game, however, with the listing specifically requiring “a knowledge of God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok (2022)” along with the systems introduced during the most recent outing, it would seem to indicate that the God of War story is far from over.

Fans will likely be excited to delve back into the mythos surrounding the franchise, but it is worth noting that Ragnarok’s art director moved on from Sony so a release will be years away while the studio looks to backfill key roles before the game kicks into full production.

However long a new entry into the franchise takes, it is likely not to bother some fans. Not only did Ragnarok garner praise from critics and fans when it was released, but the latest God of War title smashed through significant milestones for both Sony and Santa Monica, showing there is still an appetite for Kratos.

God of War Ragnarok is available now on PS4 and PS5.
