When Sony first revealed the next God of War game, which many theorize will be titled God of War Ragnarok, it announced an ambitious 2021 release window alongside it. But since the God of War Ragnarok reveal included nothing more than a logo (and not even the game title), many were unconvinced that it would actually launch this year. And as it so happens, the God of War Ragnarok release date has indeed been delayed outside of its 2021 release window.

Sony confirmed as much in a recent blog post, where it confirmed that development on God of War started later than another one of its big upcoming games, Horizon Forbidden West. It said that it made the decision to delay God of War Ragnarok's release date to 2022 so that the development team can deliver a game that lives up to fan expectations without sacrificing the health of its developers.

The God of War Ragnarok release date delay wasn't the only big piece of information from Sony's recent blog post. The post also double-downed on God of War Ragnarok being a cross-gen release coming to both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. This has always been the intention, though some insiders seemed to be under the impression that the new God of War game would be skipping PS4 in favor of being a PlayStation 5-exclusive release.

With Sony reiterating that God of War Ragnarok is a cross-gen release, it seems like fans can put those doubts aside. As for its new release date, it will be interesting to see exactly where in 2022 it winds up. If Sony thought there was a chance that the God of War Ragnarok release date would be in late 2021, then one would think that there's a possibility the game could drop in the first half of 2022.

However, there is very little known about the new God of War game in an official capacity, so that is pure speculation at this time. Absolutely no gameplay footage has been shown so far, and it's unclear when exactly it will even have a proper reveal. PlayStation is part of Summer Game Fest, though, so maybe fans will get their first glimpse at the new God of War game sooner rather than later.

Whatever the case may be, the God of War delay should ensure that the final product has a better chance of meeting fans' lofty expectations. The 2018 God of War game was one of the most critically-acclaimed games of the last decade, and so the sequel certainly has some big shoes to fill.

God of War Ragnarok will launch in 2022 for PS4 and PS5.
