God of War Ragnarok has been confirmed to be the last game in the Norse series. Does that mean this will be the end of this franchise altogether or is there room for the characters left to begin a new journey? Maybe the series will go away from Kratos, Atreus, and everyone else in this rebooted timeline to focus on another band of mythological gods.

Could the series go to Japan, China, or even India next? It’s hard to say without getting into spoilers for God of War Ragnarok. So, let’s jump right into where the series could go next and what questions were left on the table. Now the spoilers will begin.

6 Will Kratos Become The New Odin?

Kratos in God of War Ragnarok

Before the game turns players over to Kratos and Freya again after the credits, the last cutscene shows him as a golden god on a mural. He is being worshiped by people happily which almost brings him to tears. This is one of the central themes throughout God of War Ragnarok. No one, not even Kratos, ever imagined he would be a god that people would want to worship which is a big change in lore.

His whole god-based life was obsessed with revenge and not aiding the people. Does this mural mean that Kratos will take over for Odin as the one big god left in this Norse-based region? Also, will Freya stay by his side as a god and perhaps his third wife?

5 Will Atreus Find The Giants?

God of War Ragnarok Atreus

While Kratos is crying over his newfound potential godhood, Atreus peaces out. He tells his father that he needs to go find giants and be with his people. He has his giant sack full of balls that he could use to revive them somehow.

Atreus may find their bodies, vessels for new bodies, or an entire regiment of his race still alive. Will the next game focus on his quest to find giants, leaving Kratos behind, or will two separate games be produced? Also, will Angrboda eventually join Atreus?

4 Odin's Pursuit Of Creation

God of War Ragnarok Odin

The 2018 reboot opened a whole can of worms with the very concept of Kratos, a Greek god, traveling to a new land to be part of Norse culture. Is Midgard on Earth, a separate Earth away from his own, a different dimension, or what?

The bigger question then is what other religious worlds are in existence? Is Jesus hanging out with Buddha somewhere? Odin’s crack in space and time could have held all the answers with some sort of supreme race of beings out there controlling everything. Is that where the series will eventually go?

3 What’s The Story Behind Freyr And Ingrid?

Freyr and Ingrid in God of War Ragnarok

There are eight companions in the game, including Atreus who also becomes playable. Once he reaches Asgard, Odin will give Atreus a sentient sword called Ingrid. Odin doesn’t explain where he got Ingrid from, or what exactly Ingrid is. God of War Ragnarok wants to keep things mysterious and for a good reason.

One of the biggest surprises in the final conflict sees Freyr, Freya’s brother, call out to something which turns out to be Ingrid meaning that they have a past. Is Ingrid just a magical sword Freyr befriended at some point in his life, or is there more to the story between the two of them?

2 Will Mimir Get A Body Again?

A cutscene featuring characters in God of War Ragnarok

Is Mimir going to be a head all of his life or is he going to do something about that? He may be one of the best characters in God of War Ragnarok as a funny companion, but the very idea of him is perplexing. Isn’t it painful to ride Kratos around and get kicked by undead warriors on occasion or to smell the mighty god of war pass wind? Surely someone in the nine, or more like eight now, realms can figure out a way to give Mimir a body. Atreus gave Fenrir the body of a god dog, so why didn’t Atreus think of that when he spirited Odin away?

He could have done the same thing to Mimir’s head and then put his spirit back into Odin’s body. Since Odin can transform, as he shows off with Tyr throughout the game, Mimir as Odin then could do the same thing to become someone else. Mimir could even transform into his normal body again. This may sound like high thinking but it feels pretty obvious given the journey these characters take in the game.

1 How Faye Met Kratos

Faye in God of War Ragnarok

Faye was one of the biggest mysteries left hanging in the 2018 reboot. The game begins with her dead and not a single frame of her character’s face is shown. Even her name was a significant mystery as much as Atreus’ real name: Loki. God of War Ragnarok reveals a bit more about her, but only after she gives birth to Atreus.

Her appearances before Kratos in his dreams serve as warnings. It makes sense thematically for the game, but so many more questions popped up because of her involvement in the plot. Is she really dead or has her spirit gone on to the land of the giants and us just awaiting Atreus to put her in a new body? Also, how did she meet Kratos? How did Kratos leave Greece? The questions could continue, but a prequel game could answer many of them.

God of War Ragnarok was released on November 9, 2022, and is available on PS4 and PS5.
