Santa Monica is gearing up to release God of War: Ragnarok, the much-anticipated sequel to 2018's God of War, reportedly sometime in 2022. These two games are unique in the God of War franchise, as they move away from Greek mythology and take Kratos to the world of Norse mythology where he faces a new set of gods and mythical creatures to battle. This time around, the Spartan warrior is not alone, and he is joined by his son, Atreus, who is skilled with a bow, although he occasionally needs his father's guidance when his ego gets the best of him. Together, they make for a dynamic duo capable of taking down the tallest of trolls and defeating the most dangerous of dragons.

God of War: Ragnarok has faced delays, in part due to health complications from Christopher Judge who plays Kratos, and in part due to the global COVID-19 pandemic which affected the development of several titles. However, after a long wait, Santa Monica has assured gamers that they can expect the final part of Kratos' Norse adventures in 2022, though a precise release date has yet to be announced. Fortunately, if the accumulating rumors and leaks are anything to go by, gamers will not have to wait much longer to find out God of War: Ragnarok's release date.

Sources Suggest A State of Play Event in Late June

For a while, journalists and industry insiders have been suggesting that Santa Monica is getting ready to reveal God of War: Ragnarok's release date and these rumors have only heated up in the last month. This has been spurred, in part, by increased activity from Ragnarok producer Cory Balrog on Twitter. A recent Tweet from him featuring an image of Kratos, along with the caption "stay... calm... boy...," gathered a significant amount of attention and speculation, and some gamers believe he is hinting at some upcoming God of War news soon.

On the 23rd of June, prominent leaker @insider_wtf posted a GIF on Twitter featuring Kratos along with the number "11110." As clever sleuths discovered, this is the binary code for the number 30, leading many to conclude that the leaker is hinting that some Ragnarok-related news is coming on the last day of June. Gamers have been paying close attention to the leaker, as they have a near-perfect track record.

This date is significant, as it aligns with recent rumors that Sony has a State of Play lined up on the same day. Many, including industry insider Tom Henderson, have speculated that the God of War: Ragnarok release date reveal will come via a State of Play. The theory makes sense, as 30 June falls on a Thursday, which is when Sony typically hosts its State of Play events. It would be worthwhile for the event to be centered squarely on Ragnarok, as gamers have not learned more about the game for a long time. However, even a trailer nestled among others would be greatly appreciated.

God of War: Ragnarok May Be Released in November

Although signs may post towards late June for the next batch of official God of War news, this still does not tell gamers when they can expect to finally have Ragnarok in their hands. However, some sources claim to already have the answer to this question. In early June, writing for Bloomberg, Jason Schreier rejected rumors that Ragnarok had been pushed to 2023 and revealed that his sources claim that Sony plans to release Ragnarok in November. Like other sources, Schreier also claimed that the release date may be revealed in June.

It is easy to believe Schreier, as November is a prime window for releasing big-budget AAA titles due to its proximity to the holiday season. Furthermore, there appear to be no other headlining titles from Sony's first-party studios lined up for that period. On the flip side, it would put Ragnarok in competition with a few other highly anticipated titles, including Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. However, with the amount of steam that the game has accumulated behind it, there is little that could hinder its sales at this point.

What Can Gamers Expect From God of War: Ragnarok?

Kratos and Atreus Staredown

Thanks to his actions in 2018's God of War, Kratos has two bloodthirsty enemies on his tail. After witnessing Kratos kill her son, Baldur, Freya will stop at nothing to get her vengeance, and she is joined by Thor who is armed with the mighty Mjolnir hammer. Kratos and Atreus will also have to deal with Ragnarok, an incoming apocalyptic event that will cause untold destruction if they do not find a way to stop it. Fortunately, they will have a few folks on their side including Mimir, as well as the quarreling brothers Brok and Sindri.

With God of War: Ragnarok, fans hope for many burning questions to be answered and mysteries to be uncovered. Gamers may finally discover the significance of Atreus' connection to Loki, the Norse trickster god who features prominently in the Ragnarok myth, and they may also learn more about Atreus' mother, Fray, who is an enigmatic figure. There is the chance that Odin may appear in God of War: Ragnarok, as he is a character that has been continuously alluded to. According to Mimir, he is not a friendly fellow, and he is obsessed with the pursuit of knowledge.

Regardless of when the God of War: Ragnarok's release date finally gets revealed, it is clear that the game is just about ready for gamers to finally enjoy. Voice actor Ryan Hurst recently announced on Twitter that he is done recording his lines for Thor, which is good news for all. Soon, gamers will get to experience Kratos and Atreus' final chapter in Norse mythology, and with the stakes higher than ever, there is no telling what epic battles await.

God of War: Ragnarok is expected to release in 2022 on PS4 and PS5.
