The God of War franchise is famous for its depiction of Greek mythology and the fictional god of war, Kratos. In 2018, Santa Monica Studios took the franchise from Greek mythology to Norse mythology. In God of War (2018), Kratos travels through the world of Norse mythology, fighting gods and beasts. However, the game did not show many mythological weapons.

God of War: Ragnarok was teased in September 2020. From the title, it's easy to conclude that Kratos will continue to traverse Norse mythology. If that's the case, God of War: Ragnarok could showcase a number of weapons and items from those ancient tales.

15 Angurvadal

Ringed Knight holding sword Dark Souls 3

Weapons from Norse mythology often have a feature that makes that weapon stand out from all the others. Angurvadal is a sword in Norse mythology that was wielded by Viking, who passed it down to his son, Thorsten.

Angurvadal is inscribed with Runic letters. These glow brightly in times of war and dimly in times of peace. If Kratos comes into contact with the legendary blade, it is safe to assume that it will glow as bright as the sun.

14 Dáinsleif

Dainsleif Sword Art Online Alicization RS

Dáinsleif is another sword with a unique characteristic. It was wielded by King Hogni and was forged by the dwarves. The dwarves live in Svartalfheim, which Kratos and his son, Atreus, had not visited yet. However, they do come into contact with a couple of dwarves.

What makes Dáinsleif so intriguing is that it cannot be unsheathed without killing someone. This sword also deals wounds to its opponents that never heal.

13 Gjallarhorn

Stone inscription of Gjallarhorn God of War

Gjallarhorn makes a couple of appearances in Norse mythology. The name is actually self-explanatory. Heimdall actually drinks from the horn to gain wisdom from Mímisbrunnr, the well that belonged to Mimir. Heimdall also uses the horn to summon all of the gods and goddesses to prepare for Ragnarok.

While it may seem unlikely that Kratos will wield Gjallarhorn, there is a chance that the horn will make an appearance in Heimdall's possession if he appears in God of War: Ragnarok.

12 Gleipnir

Kratos in chains God of War Ascension

Gleipnir an unbreakable chain used to bind Fenrir, the mighty wolf and child of the god Loki. This is another Dwarven-forged weapon. To forge a chain so indestructible, the dwarves needed strange ingredients. In God of War (2018), Mimir mentions Gleipnir when Atreus asks how Brok and Sindri make things out of outlandish ingredients.

Kratos has an unpleasant history with chains. If Gleipnir does appear in Ragnarok, it will be interesting to see how he reacts to seeing Fenrir imprisoned in chains.

11 Gram

Gram in the tree Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice

The story of Gram is similar to that of Excalibur. This sword was presented by Odin, who stuck it in the trunk of a Barnstokkr tree at a wedding feast. Odin states that anyone who can pull the sword out will receive it as a gift.

While Kratos is not known for wielding traditional swords, there's a chance he and Atreus could confront Odin in Ragnarok. This could potentially lead to Kratos having to pull Gram from the Barnstokkr tree to use it against Odin, as he did with the Blade of Olympus against Zeus.

10 Grídarvölr

Magical staves are not typically seen in the god of war's arsenal. However, Kratos doesn't hesitate to use any tools to protect himself and those he cares about.

Gridarvolr may be yet another addition to Krato's armory. This magical staff was given to Thor to fight a giant and his daughters. It's possible that Kratos and Atreus could race against Thor to obtain Gridarvolr first.

9 Gungnir

Pulling Gungnir Assassin's Creed Valhalla

One of the most famous weapons in Norse mythology is Gungnir. Odin wields this weapon in almost every depiction. Gungnir is yet another dwarf-made weapon, which Odin used at Ragnarok to attack Fenrir. This spear has impeccable balancing, so anyone regardless of skill or strength could hit their target.

Potential parallels between the Norse mythology of Ragnarok and the original God of War trilogy could be drawn in God of War: Ragnarok. The fight between Odin and Fenrir could take place, with Kratos and Atreus playing a third-party role.

8 Hofund

Hofund Marvel Duel

Heimdall is the god of foresight and guardian of the Bifrost, the rainbow bridge that connects the Nine Realms to Asgard. He possesses the Gjallarhorn, as well as the blade Hofund. In the Marvel films, this blade opens and closes the gate to the Bifrost; however, it is unclear if it serves the same purpose in Norse mythology.

What is clear in mythology is that Heimdall uses Hofund to fight Loki at Ragnarok. This makes it a perfect candidate for an appearance in God of War: Ragnarok.

7 Lævateinn

Laevateinn Phantasy Star Online 2

Lævateinn is one of few weapons here not forged by dwarves. Loki created Lævateinn and used it to kill Vithopnir, the rooster living at the top of the world tree Mimameid. This shouldn't be confused with the more well-known world tree, Yggdrasil.

Lævatienn's shape varies across interpretations of the story. Most often, it is a bladed weapon. If Loki appears in Ragnarok, there is a possibility that Lævateinn could appear as well.

6 Mistilteinn

Glass Sword Elder Scrolls V Skyrim

Mistilteinn has shifted between multiple owners in stories. Práinn, a king of Valland, owned the sword and had it buried with him. After delving into Práinn's tomb and defeating the undead king, Hrómundr Gripsson, a Danish warrior, kept Mistilteinn and used it to kill a few kings.

In one story, Mistilteinn is used to slay Baldr. Although Kratos kills Baldr at the end of God of War (2018), that doesn't mean that Mistilteinn cannot appear in the sequel.

5 Mjölnir

Mjolnir God of War

Thor's hammer needs no introduction, as the weapon of the Norse god of thunder. God of War fans actually saw the hammer at the end of the God of War (2018). After Kratos and Atreus return home, a storm rolls in. When Kratos goes outside to investigate, Thor stands out of frame, and Mjolnir drops down before cutting to black.

This foreshadows a fight between the Ghost of Sparta and the hammer-wielding god. Mjolnir could play a bigger role in Ragnarok.

4 Skidbladnir

Kratos and toy boat God of War

Most people would not consider a ship a weapon. However, Skidbladnir redefines the meaning of the word. Dwarves built this ship, after which Loki gained possession of it and gifted it to the god Freyr.

Skidbladnir is renowned as the best ship within Norse mythology. Odin granted Skidbladnir with magic that allowed it to be folded and placed in a pocket. In God of War (2018), Atreus and Mimir mention Skidbladnir, and one of Atreus's toys is a small ship. Skidbladnir may play a bigger role in Ragnarok.

3 Skofnung

Steel Greatsword in Elder Scrolls V Skyrim

Skofnung was wielded by the Danish king Hrólf Kraki, and has many different aspects. It possesses "supernatural sharpness", and supposedly contains the spirits of King Hrólf's berserker bodyguards.

Its hilt cannot be exposed to the sun, and it cannot be drawn in the presence of women. Wounds from the blade will not heal unless rubbed by the corresponding Skofnung stone. If Skofnung appears in Ragnarok, Kratos will have to be vigilant not break these rules.

2 Sword of Surtr

Sword of Surtr Assassin's Creed Valhalla

Surtr is a guardian similar to Heimdall. Instead of guarding Asgard, Surtr guards Muspelheim. Legends say Surtr will join the battle of Ragnarok after Fenrir kills Odin. All stories that reference Surtr depict him with his sword.

The Sword of Surtr is described as being a flaming or very bright sword. Kratos is no stranger to flames and fire. If the Sword of Surtr appears in Ragnarok, it will be interesting to see how he handles the blade.

1 Tyrfing

Tyrfing Ragnarok M Eternal Love

Tyrfing has a feature similar to a previously mentioned weapon. Like Dáinsleif, Tyrfing kills someone every time it is drawn. This is because two dwarves cursed the blade after Svafrlami captured them and forced to forge Tyrfing.

However, the dwarves did not just curse Tyrfing. The sword never misses, never rusts, and can cut through stone and iron with ease. Kratos must be careful if he comes across Tyrfing or Dáinsleif.
