While Sony Santa Monica has already confirmed fan suspicions that God of War: Ragnarok will not release in 2021, that hasn’t done much for the hype surrounding the game. As the sequel to a multi Game of the Year award winner, God of War: Ragnarok has a lot to live up to and a lot that fans hope to see.

In terms of the content within God of War: Ragnarok there is a specific moment that fans expect to see in the game, and they might be disappointed if it doesn’t appear. Kratos and Thor need to have an epic showdown (at least once in the game), as promised by the post-credits scene in the prior game.

God of War's Thor Post-Credits Scene

For those that might not have seen it or known about it, there is a scene in God of War (2018) that triggers once players return to Kratos and Atreus’ home after beating the game. The scene jumps forward in time when Ragnarok is seemingly happening and a mysterious figure appears outside of Kratos’ home. It’s unclear who this shrouded figure might be, but as the camera pans down viewers see that this individual has a hammer attached to their hip. It is none other than Thor, the God of Thunder.

Given that Kratos killed Thor’s sons, Magni and Modi, it makes sense that the God of Thunder would have a bone to pick with the Ghost of Sparta. But before players could actually see what happens next, the screen fades to black and the long wait for a sequel began.

Will Kratos Fight Thor?

Presumably, God of War: Ragnarok will finally deliver on their cliffhanger scene and show us what transpires between Kratos and Thor. Whether or not it leads to a fight sequence outside of the home like Kratos’ epic fight with Baldur is up for debate, but there has to be some form of confrontation.

Depending on how Sony Santa Monica director Cory Barlog chooses to structure God of War: Ragnarok, a Thor boss fight could occur at any point within the game. There could be several confrontations with the God of Thunder like with Baldur, or he could be the big bad of the sequel. It’s also possible that Thor is just one of many Norse gods that Kratos goes up against in the game, and there is a larger confrontation looming. Most fans assume that Kratos will eventually have a showdown with Odin at some point in this new God of War franchise, but that might be saved for the third game to mirror the original trilogy.

Thor appears at the end of God of War

Speaking of mirroring the original games, this wouldn’t be the first time that Kratos will have faced off against a god of thunder, as he took on Zeus in GOW 3. However, the circumstances surrounding the Zeus boss fight were a lot different. Zeus was revealed to be Kratos’ father and the puppet-master behind a lot of the tragedy in the character’s life. Kratos' rage was directed at the Pantheon of Greek Gods, but Zeus was at the apex. Thor, on the other hand, is merely an obstacle standing in the way of Kratos living a normal life with Atreus.

While there could be a similar reveal somewhere down the line in God of War, right now the focus is on Thor’s quest for revenge and finding out whether the Atreus prophecy will come to pass. Both are significant plot points that fans hope to see explored in God of War: Ragnarok, but that eventual showdown with Thor is going to be a key moment in the sequel.

God of War: Ragnarok will release in 2022 on PS4 and PS5.
