For the most part, God of War Ragnarok follows the same exact formula as its predecessor while also throwing new features into the mix. Most systems from the previous God of War game have all returned, including Runic Attacks. Runic Attacks are special skills that can be equipped to weapons like the Leviathan Axe and the Blades of Chaos.

There are two types of Runic Attacks. One is called a Light Runic Attack and the other is called a Heavy Runic Attack. While players get Light Runic Attacks soon after the game begins, Heavy Runic Attacks take a lot more work to unlock. This guide will show God of War Ragnarok players how they can unlock Heavy Runic Attacks.

This guide contains minor spoilers, so players should proceed with caution.

How to Unlock Heavy Runic Attacks

Since Light Runic Attacks are unlocked as part of the story, it would make sense that Heavy Runic Attacks would be unlocked the same way in God of War Ragnarok. Players hoping that they will unlock Heavy Runic attacks early on are out of luck, as there aren't any to obtain until much later on in the game.

Aside from being an occasional reward for a story related boss fight, the only other way to unlock Heavy Runic Attacks is by finding them. The only place that these attacks can be found is within Legendary Chests. Legendary Chests are scattered all over the Realms, and they each contain many helpful and powerful rewards for God of War Ragnarok players. The tricky part about these Legendary Chests, however, is that they are easy to miss.

How Many Runic Attacks Are There?

There are 14 Heavy Runic Attacks in total between the Leviathan Axe, the Blades of Chaos, and the Draupnir Spear. With the exception of two Heavy Runic Attacks for the Draupnir Spear, all the other Heavy Runic Attacks are found in Legendary Chests.

One of the earliest Heavy Runic Attacks that players will have access to is the Legendary Chest that can be found at the Cliffside Ruins after completing the main story mission in Vanaheim. It is nearby two side quests in the area, so if God of War Ragnarok players happen to be doing those quests they should be on the lookout for a Legendary Chest near the drawbridge.

Can Heavy Runic Attacks Be Upgraded?

Just like with Light Runic Attacks, Heavy Runic Attacks can be upgraded. Instead of using resources like Hacksilver, Heavy Runic Attacks can be upgraded with XP. Like in the example above, Mists of Helheim can be upgraded with 3,250 XP. The second and final upgrade for that Heavy Runic Attack is 9,000 XP.

With how expensive upgrading can be, it doesn't hurt for God of War Ragnarok players to get more Luck since that will help them get more XP whenever it is earned.

God of War Ragnarok is available now for PS4 and PS5.
