God of War’s sequel is on the way after the immense success of the last game, which became one of the fastest-selling PlayStation exclusives of all time. If “Ragnarok is coming” as the trailer says, there may be plenty of Norse gods not seen in the last game who will finally be making their in-game debuts.
With the next God of War focusing on Ragnarok, there are plenty of Norse gods beyond Thor and Odin with central roles who will likely be making appearances, many of them as boss fights. Here are just some of the gods not seen so far who could be appearing in God of War’s Ragnarok sequel.
Tyr
Tyr is the Norse god of war, and has an important part to play in Ragnarok. Tyr is one-handed, having had his hand bitten off by Fenrir, the wolf destined to consume the All-Father Odin during the twilight of the gods. Tyr himself is destined to be eaten by Garmr, the hound that guards the underworld, who will also be mortally wounded in the fight.
Tyr’s descriptions in God of War so far paint him as a very different god of war to both Ares and Kratos. He is diplomatic despite his position, and is one of the few Norse gods Kratos himself respects. This could make his role in Ragnarok all the more interesting, especially if Kratos fights alongside Atreus, AKA Loki, while Tyr fights alongside his fellow Aesir.
Heimdall
Heimdall plays a vital role in Ragnarok. As the guardian of the Bifrost bridge into Asgard, Heimdall blows the Gjallarhorn which will signal the Norse gods that it is time to meet on their final battlefield. In the mythological Ragnarok prophecy, Heimdall and Loki are said to mutually wound one another – a recurring theme – and die as they watch the world around them consumed by the apocalypse.
It has not been confirmed whether or not Loki and Heimdall’s deaths are included in the Ragnarok prophecy in God of War's universe, but as the god destined to kill Loki, it’s likely Heimdall will have a big role to play. If nothing else he could be one of the more visually interesting bosses in the game: he is said to have shining white skin and golden teeth.
Vidar
Vidar is the Norse god of vengeance, and the god who is destined to avenge his father Odin after the All-Father is consumed by the wolf Fenrir. It remains unclear whether or not the events of Ragnarok will play out the same in-game as they do in the myth, so if Kratos and Atreus kill Odin it’s likely Vidar won’t be far behind them.
Vidar is among the gods who are supposed to survive Ragnarok. Others include Thor’s sons Magni and Modi, but since they’re already dead it’s possible that Odin will send Vidar to kill Atreus and Kratos, only for Vidar to be killed and Odin to become even more horrified that not only is he destined to die in Ragnarok, but his pantheon’s heirs have been killed as well.
Loki
Though Atreus has been revealed to be Loki, God of War players have yet to see exactly what that means. By the end of Ragnarok Atreus could be a very different character, especially if he is older and time manipulation is used to explain how the World Serpent and Fenrir are his children.
Only time will tell what role Loki plays in God of War’s Ragnarok and just how closely it will stick to the original myth. However, many fans will be very interested to see what sort of trickster god Atreus shapes up to be, and how it affects Atreus and Kratos’ relationship in the God of War Ragnarok sequel.
