Kratos' Blades of Chaos are almost as iconic as the titular God of War himself and so it's no surprise to see them returning alongside him in God of War Ragnarok. Players won't have access to them right from the very beginning, though it won't be long until the blades are once again wrapped around Kratos' gauntlets and the faces of anyone foolish enough to stand in his way.

As in the last God of War game, God of War Ragnarok allows players to upgrade Kratos' weapons as well as learn powerful new skills that can completely change the way that the weapons behave in battle. While the Blades of Chaos are at level 1, there won't be too many unlockable skills available to players, though this arguably makes it much easier when it comes to deciding which Blades of Chaos skills to unlock first.

The Best Blades of Chaos Skills to Unlock First

Those who prefer getting in close and personal with their victims will probably want to unlock Rushing Chaos from the Melee branch first, as it's not only an incredibly powerful skill, but also one that can help to quickly close the gap between Kratos and his enemies. To use it, players simply need to sprint toward an enemy and then hold the R1 button. This will cause Kratos to leap in the direction of the enemy and unleash a powerful spinning slash that hits the enemy multiple times.

When it comes to techniques, there's only one skill available to begin with, but Vaporise Frost is a fairly useful one nonetheless. What's more, at just 250 XP, it's also one of the cheapest skills that players can unlock for the Blades of Chaos and thus one of the easiest to unlock. It's a passive ability that allows melee attacks with the Blades of Chaos to dish out bonus damage to frosted enemies. Granted, this is somewhat situational but can still come in very handy during the first few chapters of God of War Ragnarok.

The last early-game Blades of Chaos skill that God of War Ragnarok players should prioritize is Hyperion Grapple 1, as it can seriously improve a player's Ranged options. Once unlocked, rather than pulling an impaled enemy toward him, Kratos will instead launch himself directly at the enemy with a high chance of stunning them if and when he makes contact. Should players impale an enemy while they're in mid-air rather than on the ground, holding the R1 button will instead slam them into the ground, dealing high damage in the process.

God of War Ragnarok is available now for PS4 and PS5.
