It's unknown yet how much time has passed, but Atreus has definitely grown up in God of War: Ragnarok. With more mature features and a fashionable yet utilitarian outfit, God of War: Ragnarok impresses with Atreus' latest design.

Atreus is a standout character from 2018's God of War, serving as an integral part of the game's combat system and narrative. He is a necessary asset while fighting with his incredible bow-related attacks, such that when he is not around, the player desperately misses his presence. Perhaps more importantly, Atreus' story is a personable one, going from a kid just trying to make his father proud, to trying to understand his place in a world full of all-powerful god. Although the specifics of his characterization aren't known yet, players can already see how physically Atreus' age has changed him come God of War: Ragnarok.

In God of War: Ragnarok, Atreus has received a new design, that while reminiscent of his original appearance, is also indicative of his growth physically and narratively. For starters, in the render by art director Raf Grassetti, he is older, with a narrower face and more detailed features, and is much taller, standing now at Kratos' shoulders. If Santa Monica plans to reuse some of its tricks to convey Kratos' power over Atreus, it will have to shrink the boy even more, which may just shatter the illusion. due to this growth though, and perhaps also a boost in confidence, Atreus now wears his arrow quiver around his waist instead over his shoulder as he did in the first game.

Besides the physical changes in Atreus, his outfit has received a considerable redesign. Similar to Kratos' redesign in Ragnarok, Atreus' clothing has him equipped for the cold, the stark yellow outerwear on his chest and arms sealing in the fur garments he wore in the original game. Below of his new belts, Atreus still wears the piece of Kratos' Spartan attire around his waist as he did in the last title. A nice added touch is the loop-like fluorish on Atreus' shooting arm, the whole garmet appearing more padded than just the undershirt Atreus originally wore.

Overall, Atreus' redesign definitely feels like what an older Atreus would wear. While appearing older, thankfully, his clothing looks appropriate for his age and his purpose in combatf: evasion and striking from afar. Considering how pivotal a role to play Atreus has in Ragnarok, it will be interesting to see if he maintians this appearance throughout the game. Likewise, players could give Atreus armor in the first God of War, so hopefully that makes a return as well.

God of War: Ragnarok launches on PS4 and PS5 in 2022.
