Sony just concluded its PlayStation 5 Showcase presentation with a bombshell announcement. After revealing the PlayStation 5 price and release date, Sony officially confirmed that the new God of War game is coming to PS5 in 2021, with Sony Santa Monica once again developing the new game.

The teaser trailer for the new God of War game was brief, showing the franchise's symbol and having very little in the way of details. However, it did display a message: "Ragnarok is coming," which can't mean anything good for Kratos or his son. But while the God of War teaser more or less just confirmed that the new game is coming in 2021 for PlayStation 5, the events of the 2018 game may still give fans a pretty good idea of what to expect. Those that have yet to complete 2018's God of War should note that the rest of this article will have some spoilers for the game.

2018's God of War has a secret ending where it suggests Thor, Odin's son and the God of Thunder, will be a major antagonist in the new game. Whether or not that's the case remains to be seen, but it does seem likely. It's possible that Kratos will face off against Odin as well, but one has to think Sony Santa Monica will save that encounter for a later game in the God of War series.

Another possible plot point in the new God of War is Kratos's death. This is hinted at strongly at the end of the first God of War, but again, that could be a red herring or it could be saved for the game after the next one. There's really a lot of different directions that the God of War franchise can go, and it will definitely be interesting to see what happens, to say the least.

With the reveal that God of War is coming to PS5 in 2021, it seems Sony is already looking for the next-generation console to have a stacked year next year. Besides God of War, other big games like Horizon Forbidden West and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart are expected for 2021 as well. Not only that, but there will be big multi-platform PS5 games coming in 2021, too, like Resident Evil 8 and Hogwarts Legacy, the highly-anticipated Harry Potter RPG.

More information on God of War for PS5 should come next year. Fans should be sure to tune in to upcoming Sony State of Play events to learn more.
