God of War was released in 2018 but the hype around the upcoming release of the sequel Ragnarok has been bringing Kratos and Atreus back into the forefront of discussion. The increased attention around God of War, mixed with it being available to play on PC via PlayStation Now, makes now a perfect time to release an official port of the game on PC.

Fans are preparing themselves for the next installment of the God of War series, with speculation and theory crafting increasing by the day. PC players can currently dive into God of War through the PlayStation Now subscription service but that is not the same as a true PC port and does not offer support for mouse and keyboard users.

Increased Hype for God of War

With the excitement around God of War growing, and as more and more fans prepare for the upcoming sequel, gamers who have yet to play God of War may be feeling pressure to explore what Kratos and Atreus offer on their journey. PC players can certainly play God of War on their PC today, however, the experience may not be quite what they are looking for.

The current PlayStation Now offering of God of War for PC does not offer the traditional PC support many gamers would expect and even goes so far as to require a PlayStation 4 DualShock controller to be able to play the game, something many PC gamers may not have as many desktop gamers prefer the mouse and keyboard over something handheld. This severely limits the number of PC gamers who are going to play God of War via PlayStation Now.

From Horizon: Zero Dawn To God of War

While Sony has only allowed a few of their first-party games to be played on PC, the support shown for these titles has been overwhelming, proving there is a niche for PlayStation titles to appear on gamer’s PCs. Horizon: Zero Dawn is the most notable mention of a PlayStation title getting an official PC release and it has done well because of it.

Releasing these PlayStation titles on PC increases the excitement for the game and gets more players excited for potential sequels. While Horizon: Zero Dawn was released in 2017 and is just now seeing a PC port, there are still many gamers on PC who have not played the game and jumped on their chance to do so. Horizon: Zero Dawn has proven to be a successful PC port, paving the way for future PlayStation titles to join the PC catalog.

Upcoming God of War Sequel

The upcoming sequel to God of War is on the way and allowing more gamers to play the 2018 God of War now will only increase the number of players excited for the sequel coming in 2022. Granted, Sony will most likely not release the sequel on PC for a couple of years, but giving PC gamers the 2018 God of War prior could be a solid marketing strategy leading up to the release of God of War’s sequel Ragnarok.

Giving PC gamers God of War now could lead to more PS5 console sales when the sequel comes out next year because some PC gamers may be impatient and not want to wait for the sequel to release on PC, especially since it is not a guarantee at this time. While there is no official news about God of War getting an official PC port, the success of Horizon: Zero Dawn’s PC port is certainly a driving factor in the discussion.

Benefits Of A PC Port of God of War

Santa Monica discusses Atreus as a playable character

Bringing God of War to PC would mean a lot of benefits for the game. With many PCs having access to options like FOV sliders and more in-depth settings, players would be able to fine-tune their settings so God of War can be played at much higher frame rates than the current 60 FPS target while possibly getting a native 4K resolution compared to the upscaled checkerboard resolution currently offered.

God of War on PC would also breathe new life into the game with more people streaming their experience and ultimately getting more people excited to either play the PC port of God of War or increase excitement around the upcoming sequel. This would also be a good way to get many players back into the game to refresh their knowledge of the story so far leading up to the upcoming sequel.

How Likely Is A God of War PC Port?

God of War getting a PC port before its sequel arrives on PlayStation seems unlikely at this time. With no news of Santa Monica Studios working on a PC port mixed with the PlayStation Now offering, an official PC port now sounds like bad timing. PlayStation is not in the market of cutting into their own sales and while an official PC port would generate sales through Steam, it would also cut into PlayStation Now since God of War has become one of its biggest attractions.

While God of War would be welcomed on PC by many gamers, it will probably not happen until the game has lived on PlayStation Now for some time. However, this does not mean it is impossible as Sony has previously expressed interest in bringing their games over to the PC as seen with Horizon: Zero Dawn.

Another factor in a God of War PC port is taking into account its developer, Santa Monica Studios. Creating a PC port takes time and people to make the port happen. In this case, that is time and people that Santa Monica Studios could use to work on the God of War sequel, meaning a PC port of the 2018 God of War could pull from the resources dedicated to Ragnarok.

With all the different factors at play, now would still be a great time to release an official PC port of the 2018 God of War, inviting more players into the game while increasing the hype around the sequel. Whether or not the public see a true PC port of God of War anytime soon is still a mystery, however, many are holding onto hope that Kratos and Atreus will bless their Steam libraries soon.

God of War is available now for PC via PS Now, PS4, and PS5 via backward compatibility.
