With the release of God of War on April 20th, and the resounding positive feedback the game has been receiving, naturally, people want to know what's next for the creative director of the game, Cory Barlog. Speaking to YouTube channel SkillUp in an impromptu interview, Barlog details the difficulties he and his team had during God of War's development, his plans for the future, and his good luck ritual of always being alone when the reviews come out.

With speculation over what the next generation of consoles could bring, and the possibility that it may be at least 2020 before the release of the PlayStation 5, the future for Barlog and his team is unclear, although he did drop some hints that it might not be what the industry is expecting. As his role in Kratos' latest outing comes to a close, Barlog is already starting to plan for the future, and working on another established franchise title is not what the director wants for his next project. In the interview he states his desire to create something entirely of his own inspiration:

“I really would love to create something of my own next, something that really is truly 100% coming from my original vision.”

Despite this statement, Barlog is clearly proud of what his team achieved during their five-year development of God of War, but it is also clear that it wasn't entirely smooth sailing along the way. In a demonstration of the fact that even those at the very top of the industry have difficulties during the evolution of a game, Barlog admits that there were times when he thought the whole project was going to come crashing down around him.

Speaking of his fear of becoming the person "who took a franchise and brought it down to its knees,” personal mantras and a capable staff pulled God of War through in the face of looming deadlines.

For now, at least, Barlog will continue to watch God of War's progress after its release to see if it can transfer excellent critical reviews to commercial success, but if it does as expected then it may just give him the leg up he needs to get an original project off the ground with Sony Interactive Entertainment.

God of War is set for release on April 20th, 2018 for PlayStation 4.
