God of War (2018) brought the God of War series back to prominence after a near five-year hiatus, and God of War Ragnarok brings an end to the Norse saga with a matching Metacritic score.

Currently, God of War Ragnarok is the second-highest-rated new release of 2022. The only game surpassing God of War Ragnarok's Metacritic score is FromSoftware's Elden Ring, which received a score of 96. Additionally, God of War Ragnarok is the highest rated PS5 game by PlayStation, ahead of Demon's Souls. Demon's Souls has a Metacritic score of 92, which is just above the average for the God of War series.
