Remembering to save the game is important no matter the title, but especially so in games as lengthy as God of War. With a meaty main story, a bevy of side quests, and all manner of secrets to unlock, God of War isn't lacking content. In fact, it is one of the most densely packed games of the previous generation.

God of War, like many other modern titles, makes use of an auto-save system that will record progress after major moments in the game. However, this might not be as up-to-the-minute as players would like. Or, there are those that still prefer to manually save a game before shutting it down for the day. No matter the reasoning, saving progress in God of War is only a few button presses away.

Saving the Game in God of War (2018)

  • Press Options on the controller to bring up the menu
  • Press Triangle for "Options" in the menu
  • Select "Save"

That's it. Three simple steps will keep a player's progress firmly recorded. Even better, God of War doesn't utilize specific save points, meaning players can save their game at any time they like. For example, this could be before a particularly difficult encounter or after completing a difficult puzzle to prevent unnecessary repetition. It's especially helpful having a save ready to load when taking on challenges like the valkyries, whose notorious difficulty takes players upwards of days to overcome.

Saving on the PC version is likely to be even more important once the modding community gets their hands on God of War. Being able to have multiple versions of the game, including "clean" versions and those with Kratos and Atreus swapped for Yoda and Grogu will be paramount.

This will hold especially true when testing out various mods. Sometimes they can be volatile and having a known good point to fall back onto is part of the process. And sometimes, players simply want to be able to go back to a "pure" version of the game after extensively modding and will want to have a save specifically for that.

God of War was initially released as a PlayStation exclusive in 2018. Its story picks up some time after Kratos' left his homeland following his slaughter of the Greek pantheon. After the passing of his wife, Kratos and his son Atreus must go on a journey to spread the ashes of their loved one in her home realm. It was well-received by fans and critics alike for its emotional story, gorgeous visuals, stunning soundtrack, and compelling gameplay.

God of War is available now on PS4 and PS5, and releases on PC on January 14, 2022.
