The modding community continues to create some amazing works within the worlds of games like God of War, even when being exclusive to PlayStation consoles makes the act difficult. A recent mod, however, doesn't take the ordinary route of a comical stance on Kratos or Atreus, but gives players a brand new perspective on some of the most serious moments from Santa Monica Studio's latest entry in the series.
A video uploaded by YouTuber Speclizer, a content creator who often messes around with the camera and graphical features of games like God of War, puts the player closer into Kratos' shoes. It does this by taking the camera away from the general over-the-shoulder view and recreating the first person shot the game gives for the fight against ghost Zeus in other iconic scenes.
The video opens up with the heartfelt conversation when Kratos gives Atreus the knife gifted to the boy by Faye, an emotional moment that marks the characters finally connecting with each other from the Greek god's point of view. It's a surreal sight to see this from such an intimate perspective between the characters, even if it does break God of War's one-shot cinematic style in order to pull the moment off. However, Speclizer's use of the first-person in the clip is also able to connect with Atreus even more than in the original game, especially by showing exactly how massive Kratos looks as he towers over the boy.
Of course, not every emotion is highlighted from this view, as some of the shortcuts used by developers like Santa Monica Studio become readily apparent when God of War's camera is altered. One of these moments comes when the perspective shifts to Mimir speaking to Baldur, Magni, and Modi before meeting Kratos for the first time. Other camera tricks have caught this before, but the characters are positioned to be lifted slightly from the ground in order to appear correctly from the view players are regularly given, before disappearing into the floor as they leave.
The mod itself looks like it could enhance some scenes, though it may require an extra level of suspension of disbelief, as certain graphical errors appear that had previously been hidden by God of War's usual perspective. However, Speclizer doesn't elaborate in the video, or its description and additional comments, where players can find this mod, or how to get it running. Still, the shots that the content creator has posted are impressive on their own, and Speclizer has plenty more footage from the game for fans to enjoy on the rest of the YouTube channel.
