Sony Santa Monica Hiring New IP Shooter

Sony’s Santa Monica Studio is one of the company’s greatest assets; aside from helping out with the development of second-party PS3 games like Journey, the studio is also famous for the God of War franchise. However, it seems the team is working on something new.

Sony Santa Monica was hiring for a new IP just last year. A more recent job listing may give us some ideas on what this game could be. The listing, for a Senior Combat Designer, states that familiarity with the development of first or third-person shooters is “a plus.” This, of course, leads us to believe the game in development is a shooter of some kind.

Sony Santa Monica also lists experience with vehicular combat design to be desirable. A shooter with vehicles? This sounds an awful lot like Starhawk, a game that includes contributions from the studio. Let’s hope that Starhawk and whatever Sony Santa Monica’s working on don’t cannibalize each other in the long run.

Just yesterday, Sony formally announced God of War: Ascension, which is in development at Sony Santa Monica. The question on everyone’s minds is probably “how would the studio be able to develop two games at once?” Much like fellow first-party studio Naughty Dog, Santa Monica announced last year that it had plans to double in size. It’s unlikely this expansion was just for the development of God of War: Ascension.

PlayStation Lifestyle points out that Stig Asmussen, director of God of War 3, is not reassuming his role for Ascension, instead replaced by Todd Papy. Asmussen’s Linkedin profile still has him listed as a “game director” — if he’s not working on Kratos’ latest adventure, then perhaps he’s working on this new title.

PlayStation 3 already has plenty of shooters, so unless this is a brand new title for the PS4 or Vita, it seems like Sony may be over saturating the console with the genre. Last year saw the release of Killzone 3, SOCOM 4 and Resistance 3, with Starhawk launching next month and DUST 514 coming later this year. That’s not to forget other PS3 shooters, such as MAG, which still have a healthy player base. Santa Monica’s new project may turn out to be a great game, but one just can’t help but feel like we’ve seen enough Sony first-party shooters.
