God of War director Cory Barlog claims that the changes he recently made to his Twitter are not hints towards a new game. By all accounts, it sounds like the Sony Santa Monica developer is focused on God of War Ragnarok, which is targeting a 2021 release.

Ever since fans discovered that Cory Barlog teased God of War Ragnarok over a year before its official announcement at the PlayStation 5 price reveal, they have been watching his social media like hawks. Just recently, some noticed that Barlog swapped out his Twitter background for a space-themed look featuring deep sleep chambers/pods and his profile picture turned into a satellite.

Of course, some assumed that Barlog was trying to give his fans a hint as to a new project. Some believed that it might be a new game, while others thought it was an obscure hint towards God of War Ragnarok. Many outlets even ran stories about the changes to the God of War director's Twitter account and the theories that accompanied those changes. However, Barlog quickly shot those down with an Arrested Development reference.

Although Barlog shut down the potential of a new game for Sony Santa Monica, it doesn't mean that the changes to his Twitter are not part of an elaborate hint. Perhaps there are clues towards the content coming in God of War Ragnarok within the space-themed images, or they are references to something that will only make sense once fans see more of Kratos and Atreus' next adventure. Whatever the case may be, fans are not going to stop analyzing every move that Cory Barlog makes on social media, if only because he has shown himself to be a public figure that likes to engage with his audience.

At this point, all gamers know about the next God of War is that it is targeting a 2021 release for the PlayStation 5 (and potentially the PS4). The teaser trailer said that “Ragnarok is Coming” but there is no clear confirmation that will be the title of the next game. Given that there is already a God of War 2, it's a safe bet that the game will have a subtitle but whether that will, in fact, be Ragnarok is unclear.

Story-wise there are a lot of different places that the next God of War game on PS5 can go, but the Ragnarok connection suggests the narrative is jumping forward in time to that all-important Norse mythological event. The secret ending for God of War hinted at a showdown between Kratos and Thor, which is likely to be a major focal point for the next game.
