God of War fans looking to carry over their progress from PS4 to PS5 received good news today. Franchise developer Santa Monica Studio is keeping old and new fans in mind with a number of updates coming to God of War on Sony's next-gen console.

God of War released in 2018 to widespread critical acclaim. With the announcement of the PlayStation 5's backward compatibility feature, Santa Monica Studio's hit title was guaranteed to make the list. In addition, the reveal of an upcoming sequel in God of War Ragnarok coming next year further ensured the series' longevity.

Still, questions remain surrounding the exact details of the carry-over. On its official Twitter account, Santa Monica Studio offered details on what players can expect. On top of backwards compatibility, players will have the option to transfer their God of War save games to PS5. Further, the Favor Performance option introduced for the PS4 Pro will be available at launch on the PS5, which will enable the game to achieve 60 frames per second at 1080p resolution. At launch, the game targeted 30 FPS on standard and slim PS4s. With the PS5's improved hardware, the game should be able to maintain that level of performance more consistently.

Lastly, Santa Monica Studio added an extra surprise in a follow-up tweet. The developer indicated that God of War 3 Remastered will also have save transfer capability. In terms of story, players will be able to conclude Kratos' Greek arc, and then continue on into the Norse arc. If all goes as planned, the PS5 will have three full God of War games available by the end of 2021.

The news comes on the heels of other flagship PS4 titles making the transition to next-gen easier. For example, Marvel's Spider-Man is getting a PS5 remaster, including new suits and performance upgrades. The follow-up to Peter Parker's web-slinging adventure, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, is releasing simultaneously on PS4 and PS5. Coupled with the news that over 99 percent of the PS4's library will be backwards compatible, next-generation systems are poised to have very robust launch libraries.

Even though cross-generation releases became a norm earlier in the decade, it has never been particularly easy. Whereas in previous generations it made sense to hold onto an older console, whether to replay favorites or end-of-cycle releases, this generation appears to be trying to moving on from that reality.

God of War is available now on PS4, with backwards compatibility for the PS5 planned.
