It's not at all surprising that last year's God of War will be getting a sequel. The newest entry in the god-slaying series, this title may have taken things in a somewhat different direction with its gameplay and characterization of main star Kratos but it paid off in the long-run, with it becoming both a critical and commercial hit. And with it ending on a doozy of a cliffhanger, fans are more than eager to see what new adventures await Kratos and his son, Atreus, in the all-but-officially confirmed sequel. But while details may be non-existent, we may already have an idea of what to expect thanks to an easter egg hidden within a new PS4 theme. Please note that this article will have some spoilers for God of War.

This week, developer Sony Santa Monica have been celebrating the upcoming one year anniversary of God of War; among these celebrations being a free dynamic theme for PS4 and some new Avatars. However, eagle-eyed fans on Reddit have spotted a hidden message within the theme itself; specifically, a series of Nordic runes that are etched on the side of Kratos and Atreus' boat, which when translated spell out "Ragnarok is coming" - Ragnarok essentially being the apocalypse in Norse mythology. This only adds fuel to the popular theory that Kratos and Atreus are destined to start Ragnarok themselves and bring an end to the Norse gods. And considering that the game's secret ending hinted that Thor himself will soon confront them, the gods most certainly will show up as future antagonists.

sequel teaser

Of course, all of this is pure speculation at this point, but it's possible we'll see more hints in the coming week. God of War director Cory Barlog has teased that more is coming for the anniversary celebrations, though he quickly shot down some peoples' hopes by stating that there won't be any DLC announcements. Some are already speculating that it will be a trailer of some kind for the sequel though others don't expect to see anything sequel-related until after the PS5 is properly shown off.

God of War is available right now exclusively on PS4.
