Girlfriend, Girlfriend is a story about Naoya Mukai, a sophomore high school student who has always been in love with his next-door neighbor and childhood friend, Saki Saki, who is the same age, attends the same school and is even in the same class.

After years of begging and confessing and dancing in the rain, Naoya and Saki are finally a couple, and he couldn't be happier! Naoya consistently showers Saki with attention and affection; however, the relationship is thrown for a major curveball when Naoya finds himself genuinely moved by a confession of love from first-year student Nagisa Minase.

While undoubtedly madly in love with his girlfriend, Naoya does not want to turn down Nagisa's sweet and sincere confession, especially considering that she does not expect him to break up with Saki either. His solution: march over to Saki right now to ask her for permission to date them both – simultaneously.

The series' original run was from July to September 2021, running for 12 episodes, so the announcement of the second season comes almost exactly a year after the last episode of Girlfriend, Girlfriend aired. The second season will be produced by Tezuka Productions, under the direction of Satoshi Kuwabara (The Quintessential Quintuplets), character designs by Akiko Toyoda (Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Dark Side of Dimensions), also serving as the chief director of animation; while scripts are the responsibility of Keiichirō Ōchi, who will be assisted by fellow scriptwriters Mayumi Morita and Kazuhiko Inukai.

Cast information for season 2 of Girlfriend, Girlfriend is yet to be revealed; however, it is expected that the main cast of the first season – Junya Enoki, who plays the MC, Naoya Mukai; Ayane Sakura (Gabi Braun, Attack on Titan: The Final Season) who plays Saki and Azumi Waki, Nagisa's voice actor – will be reprising their roles for the upcoming second season. The first season of Girlfriend, Girlfriend was originally simulcast on Crunchyroll and is still available for viewing on the platform.
