The latest PlayStation State of Play event showcased several exciting titles making their way to Sony consoles this year and beyond. Included in the extensive line-up was a new trailer shining a light on the haunting streets of Ghostwire: Tokyo, releasing exclusively on PS5 and PC later this month. However, one curious beast titled GigaBash stood tall as part of the blast of content, unveiling a brand new multiplayer-battle kaiju experience.

While there was a lot to take in over the 20-minute run-time of State of Play, which can be found on Playstation’s official YouTube channel, Japanese developers got the chance to unveil uproarious new IP’s, like that of Capcom’s Exoprimal, and the long-awaited Square Enix sequel, Valkyrie Elysium. However, while the appearance of dinosaurs and action-oriented RPGs tried to dominate the show, one small Malaysian indie developer bit back hard.

Passion Republic Games, an indie game startup, announced that GigaBash will release on PS4 and PS5, as well as PC, later this year. The State of Play trailer exhibited the couch co-op four-player arena brawler and all its mayhem with its characters taking inspiration from tokusatsu kaijus and heroes. Sprawled over colorful cities and destructible environments, the title also introduced watchers to its first named dragon character, Rawa.

The golden giant, nicknamed the Extinction Dragon by the developer, lives up to its name with its decimating neon green fire breath, making it very difficult to miss in the trailer. Despite only showing a little over 30 seconds of gameplay, this release from Passion Republic Games is truly reminiscent of beloved Godzilla-like monster action. GigaBash will also allow players to engage in mini-games, short story modes, and online play using 10 unique characters that each incorporate a tokusatsu trope.

With a varied roster of monsters at the player's disposal in GigaBash, allowing for melee combat and explosions galore, the title could be compared most to PS2 title War of the Monsters. With Passion Republic Games acknowledging this hidden gem as inspiration for their debut into the gaming market, the company aims to use the relic as a basis for creating their behemoth title.

While there is a lot to get excited about from the releases shown at Sony’s latest State of Play event, fans of destruction and dragons on a slightly different level can embrace nostalgia once again as they huddle around their console for some couch co-op brawling in GigaBash.

GigaBash will release on PC, Playstation 4, and Playstation 5 later in 2022.
