Released in March 2022, Tango Gameworks’ Ghostwire: Tokyo was considered by some to be one of the year’s most disappointing games, but a new rumor suggests that the game may get a second chance on Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass along with some extra content. An action-adventure title that played a bit like a paranormal Far Cry, Ghostwire: Tokyo was mostly forgotten in the face of consequential competition such as Elden Ring and Horizon Forbidden West. However, more content and increased accessibility could be just what the Bethesda-published title needs to succeed.

Speculation regarding Ghostwire: Tokyo’s release on Xbox Game Pass has circulated for some time. Unfortunately, though ZeniMax Media and Bethesda are both under the Microsoft umbrella, the game debuted as a PlayStation console exclusive. Ghostwire: Tokyo was playable for PS Plus Premium subscribers at one point, but only as an hour-long demo. Ultimately, this move likely didn’t increase the game’s visibility by a noticeable margin, but, now that the game’s PlayStation exclusivity window is set to expire in the coming months, things could change substantially for the Japanese folklore-inspired title.

According to a post submitted to r/GamingLeaksAndRumors by Reddit user u/Eht_Hctins, Ghostwire: Tokyo will make its Xbox Game Pass debut in March, roughly one year after its initial release. The leaker also suggests that new content will be added to the game, though they don’t elaborate on what this might entail. It’s worth noting that u/Eht_Hctins doesn’t refer to the game by name, instead simply stating that “spooky Japanese ghosts will return in March.” Of course, barring the completely out-of-the-blue return of Tango Gameworks’ The Evil Within series, Ghostwire: Tokyo was almost certainly the game to which they were referring.

It seems that Bethesda fans have a lot to look forward to in 2023; from upcoming big-budget titles like Starfield and Redfall to updates concerning the previously-announced next entry in the Elder Scrolls saga, it should be a very big year for the publisher. With that in mind, Ghostwire: Tokyo’s launch on Xbox probably won’t turn that many heads, though additional support could hint that the IP is far from finished.

There’s also quite a bit for fans of horror gaming to look forward to this year. With huge releases such as Motive Studios’ Dead Space remake and Capcom’s remake of Resident Evil 4 pending, it could be a huge year for horror. While Ghostwire: Tokyo isn’t likely to play a huge part in that, and is not even considered a true horror game by its developers, it could serve as a supplementary part of the dawn of a new era for the genre.

Ghostwire: Tokyo is out now for PC and PS5.
