The upcoming action-adventure game, Ghostwire Tokyo, is centered around a mystery involving the citizens disappearing and supernatural spirits. The developer, Tango Gameworks, is working on the game for release in 2021. It's set to hit PlayStation 5 first, and PC and Xbox Series X releases will follow in 2022. While the title was initially revealed in 2019, there isn't an awful lot of public domain knowledge about the game. Ghostwire Tokyo has so far proven to be an enigmatic game, but there is some footage out there to give players an idea of what it'll be like.

Despite Microsoft's acquisition of Bethesda and ZeniMax MediaGhostwire's timed exclusivity on PlayStation 5 will be honored. This could be a big release for PlayStation 5 before Bethesda games become more Xbox-orientated. Tango Gameworks might be best known to gamers as the developer of the Evil Within series, with both games in that series so far being well received by fans and critics. Tango Gameworks is leaving aside the zombies and embracing the paranormal with Ghostwire Tokyo based on the trailers released so far.

Official E3 Teaser

Ghostwire Tokyo was officially revealed at E3 2019, accompanied by its first trailer. The first teaser doesn't show any gameplay, but it serves to establish the basic premise of the game. The trailer opens with some shots of everyday Tokyo life with the city's residents going about their business. A moody atmosphere is presented immediately, with an overcast and rainy Tokyo, which gives way to a more sinister turn. It quickly becomes apparent that not all is well in Tokyo.

The first trailer for the PlayStation 5 exclusive quickly takes a turn and shows a different side of the city. It becomes mostly uninhabited, with empty streets, save for a bunch of mysterious figures. These masked people display the ability to use supernatural powers for destructive purposes. Not much more is given away about this sect of enigmatic people, but it's heavily suggested that they're involved with the disappearances in Tokyo. The trailer ends with the ominous message of "Don't fear the unknown, attack it." This first trailer was well-received by fans, with some enjoying it specifically for its horror influence.

Gameplay Reveal Trailer

The gameplay of Ghostwire Tokyo was finally revealed in June 2020 with a brand new trailer. Despite the original impressions that many fans got, Ghostwire seems like it's leaning into action-adventure more than horror. The trailer opens with a few shots of what looks like in-engine footage of Tokyo before swiftly moving along to show off its gameplay. The protagonist is capable of wielding supernatural powers to defeat enemies, with the trailer showing off abilities reminiscent of BioShock and Dishonored. The hero is shown wielding elemental abilities of fire and frost and a bow and arrow.

This second Ghostwire Tokyo trailer captured on PS5 shows off a variety of enemies that players will have to deal with as well. There are humanoid creatures in suits resembling the Slender Man, levitating specters, and spooky headless foes. If this trailer is anything to go by, gamers will be in for some diverse combat against differing opponents with heavily paranormal abilities.

QuakeCon at Home 2020

Ghostwire Tokyo was briefly featured in a reel at 2020's QuakeCon at Home event. The title's appearance was brief and it was light on any new footage, but there was one key detail confirmed by Shinji Mikami, an executive producer for the game. It has been confirmed that in Ghostwire Tokyo, players will be able to pet dogs. This could be some exciting news for gamers, especially those who prefer to show compassion to animals in games.

These are all the trailers that have been revealed so far for Ghostwire Tokyo. The premise of the game and a general idea of gameplay have been set for gamers, but there is some time yet before release, meaning that new footage could be revealed. While it was confirmed for an October release, this seems uncertain after Sony pulled release dates for third-party games from its CES 2021 sizzle reel. While the release date is up in the air, for now, fans are still hoping that the game will see the light of day in 2021.

Ghostwire Tokyo is set for release in 2021 on PlayStation 5. It will be released on PC and Xbox Series X in 2022.
