Ghostwire: Tokyo wants players to take it seriously. It’s a spooky action RPG that takes place in Tokyo, specifically the Shibuya region, with demons running around everywhere. It’s odd to have a game set in Japan but lack whimsy. There are cute and funny things about it like the floating cats that watch over the convenience stores.

Ghostwire: Tokyo is not completely devoid of humor though. Fans have taken it upon themselves to lighten the mood with memes. Most of these poke fun at the game’s mechanics. However, others are story-based. Those story memes do have some early game spoilers so be warned before jumping in.

7 Welcome To The Black Parade

A Ghostwire Tokyo meme involving My Chemical Romance

"Welcome to the Black Parade" is a song from My Chemical Romance’s most popular album, The Black Parade. The figure leading the demonic parade in Ghostwire: Tokyo is like the album’s mascot. Putting a conductor or marching leader in here from any piece of popular media would work.

My Chemical Romance fits best of all since the band's aesthetic is demon-like already. This game would have been a lot cooler if it somehow tied in the band’s music with what was going on in downtown Shibuya. The game’s original score is decent for a horror-action game though.

6 Slender Man Goes Abroad

A Ghostwire Tokyo meme involving Slender Man

Shortly after the opening cutscene wherein the demons are walking into Shibuya, the main character, Akito, is confronted by several other spirits. There are a lot of these suited ghouls in the game. They look a lot like Slender Man since that character also wears an all-black suit and has no face. The developer may have been inspired by this new age folk tale when they were designing their monsters.

Adding in the “real“ Slender Man to this meme does not feel out of place then. Maybe the tentacles are a bit much but there are far more grotesque things in Ghostwire: Tokyo than that.

5 Sephiroth!

A Ghostwire Tokyo meme involving Final Fantasy 7

Few characters transcend the video game industry into other mediums, and that holds true for heroes and also villains. A character like Sephiroth, from Final Fantasy 7, is one of those rare examples since that game was extremely popular even among non-RPG fans. This scene in Ghostwire: Tokyo has Akito start seeing visions of fire and his sister. That’s who is supposed to be standing at the end of the hall.

Sephiroth makes for a creepier hallway monitor than Akito's sibling. He would also be a better villain in this game than the masked stranger, Hannya. Maybe he is Hannya. No spoilers here.

4 Organizing Mayhem

A Ghostwire Tokyo meme involving Kingdom Hearts

Another Square Enix game that fits in perfectly with Ghostwire: Tokyo is Kingdom Hearts. Starting in the spinoff game, Chain of Memories, cloaked figures started appearing as villains. These characters were members of Organization XIII who were trying to steal Sora’s heart, memory, and other things.

Their plan is still rather confusing almost two decades later. Since these hooded figures like locking away memories and stealing hearts, their inclusion in this meme fits well with their desires since this scene sort of takes place in Akito’s head. This game too is a bit confusing.

3 It’s Dangerous To Go Alone

A Ghostwire Tokyo meme involving Ocarina of Time

That’s the Kokiri Sword from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. It was Link’s first blade in the game. It wasn’t as strong as the Master Sword, but it did the job.

This shrine in Ghostwire: Tokyo is where players will find their first piece of Katashiro. Those items are like part dolls that can absorb spirits, and their powers have nothing to do with the Kokiri Sword’s abilities. It’s just funny to imagine the game telling Akito to take a sword to a demon fight. That would be a heck of a tie-in.

2 Eve Returns

A Ghostwire Tokyo meme involving Parasite Eve

Parasite Eve is a classic horror RPG. It takes place in New York City wherein detective Aya Brea is after a ruthless demon that is infecting her city. The demonic Eve likes to manipulate mitochondria to melt humans into big puddles of goo. This goo then infects animals, turning them into mutated monsters.

There are oozing puddles in Ghostwire: Tokyo reminiscent of that phenomenon from Parasite Eve, which is why placing that game's villain in this meme works. Eve fits in with some demons in this game as well, oozing puddles aside.

1 What’s In The Box?

A Ghostwire Tokyo meme involving Metal Gear Solid 5

Players are going to stumble into quite a few apartments in the game. Many of them are stacked to the brim with cardboard boxes. Since a big mechanic within the Metal Gear Solid series allows players to hide under boxes, seeing Snake appear in this meme is not out of the ordinary.

This standing box formation is specifically from The Phantom Pain. Even though that game took place in the past, its cardboard tech was out of this world. There are moments in Ghostwire: Tokyo where a cardboard box for sneaking around would have been handy.

Ghostwire: Tokyo was released on March 25, 2022 and is available on PC and PS5.
