The highly anticipated sequel Ghostbusters Sequel will be released in theaters on Wednesday December 20th, 2023. This will be the latest entry in the popular and beloved Ghostbusters franchise, which began with the first film which was released theaters in 1984. The sequel, Ghostbusters II, was released in 1990. There was a long wait before the 2016 reboot and 2021 sequel.

In June 2022, Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan confirmed that the Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel will take place in both New York City and the Firehouse, where the 1984 film and 2016 remake is set. Fans had guessed that this would be true as the Ghostbusters: Afterlife end credits hinted at this. Jason Reitman also tweeted about the Ghostbusters firehouse earlier this month, which was exciting for fans. Ghostbusters: Afterlife was released in theaters in November 2013 and grossed more than $200 million at the global box office. Ghostbusters: Afterlife adds many things to the franchise.

Movie fans know that the two biggest times of year to release films include summer and Christmas, and December 2023 has some other big releases: Wonka starring Timothée Chalamet, The Color Purple starring Halle Bailey and Taraji P. Henson, the Untitled Star Trek Sequel, and Star Wars: Rogue Squadron.

The 2016 Ghosbusters remake had an all-star cast of Leslie Jones as Patty Tolan, Kate McKinnon as Dr. Jillian "Holtz" Holtzmann, Kristen Wiig as Dr. Erin Gilbert and Melissa McCarthy as Dr. Abigail L. "Abby" Yates. Ed Begley Jr, Andy Garcia, Michael K. Williams and Cecily Strong rounded out the cast. The next movie, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, had an all-new cast with Paul Rudd playing Gary Grooberson, Finn Wolfhard as Trevor, Carrie Coon as Callie and Mckenna Grace playing Phoebe. Original actors Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd also returned. The 2016 reboot grossed $229,147,509 at the global box office, which is comparable to the original 1984 movie, which grossed $296,578,797.

Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis wrote the original Ghostbusters, which tells the beloved story of scientists living and working in New York City and dealing with the supernatural. Dan Akyrod's original concept is a lot of fun and audiences still love Ray Parker Jr's classic and famous song.

Fans generally liked the 2021 film and it earned a 94% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. Fans of the universe can also look forward to an animated Ghostbusters series on Netflix.
