Ghostbusters: Afterlife is the second attempt to reboot the franchise. Will it succeed this time? Only time will tell, but there are a lot of reasons why this film might be a success: it's an actual sequel. One of the problems with the 2016 film was that it took place in a separate universe, which wasn't exactly what fans wanted to see.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife tries to rectify those issues by going back to the drawing board. There are clear hopes to continue the franchise forward with either another film, TV show, cartoon, video game, or comic. With that in mind, what are the most pressing issues fans are still curious about by the end of the movie, that further media could potentially answer?

There will be spoilers ahead.

6 Egon’s Money Problems

Ghostbuster Uniforms from Ghostbusters: Afterlife

The Spenglers seem to be horrifically cursed with money issues. Egon couldn’t make any money, which then transferred over to his daughter. This raises a multitude of questions. If Egon really couldn’t make any money, then how did he get along for all these decades alone?

He couldn’t afford that house and all of that equipment easily. Egon could have done odd jobs around town as a mechanic. Janine said she helped Egon by taking care of his bills, but it wasn’t clear if she paid out of pocket or if she just managed his cash. One thing is certain, though: he didn’t leave Callie anything.

5 Callie’s Husband, Parents, & Job

Callie from Ghostbusters: Afterlife

Callie’s family gets evicted at the beginning of the movie, but it's never stated why she is so broke. Getting tossed out of one’s home might be the scariest thing in real life to experience as a mother. It’s also never mentioned as to what her job is. There are a lot of things about Callie and the rest of the Spengler family that are never mentioned besides Egon.

Who, for example, was Callie's mother? It couldn’t be Janine, otherwise Callie would have recognized her when they got to the farmhouse. She had to have been raised by someone, and she wasn’t an orphan. The only other person specifically mentioned was her husband, although not by name — only that he left because he couldn’t deal with Phoebe. All of these things could get addressed in the sequel.

4 Gary And The Ghostbusters

Gary and Phoebe activity a ghost trap from Ghostbusters: Afterlife

Gary is the only person to not only know of ghosts, but also of the Ghostbusters. This brings a lot of questions to mind about the state of the world. Why is he the only one in the film that generally knows and gets excited about them? It was three decades ago, but it’s hard to forget something paranormal like that. Did he come from New York City too? If that’s the case, then why did he get shipped out to Somerville?

The subject of Ghostbusters knowledge brings up another question. After the New York City incident in 1984, were other agencies born from it? Surely Gozer is not the only powerful demon/ghost in this entire film universe. How is the rest of the world getting on? That’s the bigger question.

3 Shandor’s Plans

Gozer’s Tomb from Ghostbusters: Afterlife

Shandor was only mentioned by name in the first movie, and seeing his body in the sequel was a big deal. He was also played by a big actor, JK Simmons. It’s a shame he wasn’t able to be in the movie more than a sleeping corpse followed by a corpse split in two. What is now known is that Shandor built the high rise in New York City from the metal mined in Somerville.

If he did that as a contingency plan to the tomb in Somerville, then did he make any more altars to Gozer in the rest of the world? Maybe that’s a way to justify other Ghostbusters-like agencies popping up around the world. However, the Gozer calendar stops at 2021, so maybe this is it for Gozer.

2 Winston’s Plans For The Ghostbusters’ Future

A scene featuring characters in the Ecto-1 from Ghostbusters: Afterlife

Out of the four main Ghostbusters, Winston came out ahead. Peter presumably married Dana and is teaching, so he must at least have a conformable life. Egon and Ray were the only two that seemed to struggle after they departed ways. After the incident in Somerville, Winston decides to open up the Ghostbusters agency once again. It’s the final stinger scene.

Does that mean he bought the firehouse back from Starbucks to ghost hunt with Ray and Peter again? No, probably not. The next film, TV show, video game, or whatever will probably be about Winston finding new candidates. It’s a bit odd that he takes the fight back to New York City since it was established in Ghostbusters: Afterlife that the ghost well ran dry there many years ago. It’ll be interesting to see how things get justified next.

1 What Is & Isn’t Canon?

Ray’s Occult Books from Ghostbusters: Afterlife

The Ghostbusters canon is almost as confusing as the Halloween franchise, which has many branching timelines. Originally, the first two films were canon. There were also comic books and two separate cartoons. The 2016 film was a complete reboot that took place in a separate universe. In between all of that was a movie tie-in game, which was considered to be the official third film. The question now is: what is and isn’t canon anymore?

Specifically, is anything after the first film canon? For example, if Ghostbusters 2 did happen, then shouldn’t Vigo have been mentioned as another giant New York City incident? The Ghostbusters made the Statue of Liberty come to life; surely that wouldn't be forgotten anytime soon, The only evidence shown that Ghostbusters 2 might still be canon is that Ray has a book shop. He could have set up that shop as a nod to Ghostbusters 2 but not as a tie-in to the film. It’s all rather confusing.
