With Ghost of Tsushima still on track to release in two month’s time– at least for the time being– new information is being released regarding Sucker Punch’s upcoming open-world samurai action game, and within that information is confirmation that the game will be ditching a common feature of open-world games, waypoints.

Throughout the years, waypoints– the UI markers that point out the location of objectives on a map– have become one of the more contentious features of open-world games. Many like them for how they make it easier to find the key story locales in a massive world, but others don’t for the way they tend to artificially hold players’ hands and minimize the need for exploration and discovery.

For the latter group, it looks like Ghost of Tsushima will appeal more in that regard, because a preview feature in the latest issue of Official PlayStation Magazine UK makes it clear that players won’t have waypoints to guide them in their journey across the titular island of Tsushima. If they want to know how to continue the story and where, they’ll have to figure it out for themselves.

“Again nodding to realism, you explore the island’s lush environments without the help of waypoints, choosing where to explore next using landmarks and your knowledge of the world,” the feature reads. “Sucker Punch is no stranger to creating open worlds, but the fairly minimalist nature of the environments is a bit of a departure for the developer.”

Outside of that, the OPM feature offers up a few other intriguing details. For starters, it sounds like time will pass as players explore, with on-screen titles informing them how much has passed since the Mongol invasion of Tsushima began. Gameplay-wise, players will be free to infiltrate Mongol-held camps and castles with either a stealthy or action-packed approach, using various tools like grappling hooks, sticky arrows, and firebombs. They’ll also have a number of allies to aid them as well, but the strength of their bonds will depend on player choice, meaning enough bad decisions will have the potential of causing allies to turn on the players.

The preview also confirms that Ghost of Tsushima is still scheduled to launch in late June, keeping it from joining The Last of Us 2 and Iron Man VR in the list of PS4 exclusives that have been delayed by the coronavirus pandemic. Whether or not it will be able to keep that date, though, will remain to be seen.

Ghost of Tsushima is slated to launch on June 26 for the PS4.
