Last year saw some of the biggest PlayStation 4 games release as a fitting send-off of sorts before the next generation of consoles arrived. Ghost of Tsushima stood out amongst them, as the new IP ended up shattering expectations for many fans. The game featured an incredibly detailed world, engaging combat, and a powerful narrative that propelled it to the top of many players' game of the year lists. Now, Ghost of Tsushima is set to receive a director's cut version for the PS4 and PS5. The rerelease features many new elements, including a new story chapter and quality-of-life improvements. However, fans of the game's Legends multiplayer mode could also have a lot to look forward to when it releases.

One of Ghost of Tsushima's hallmark achievements was its combat system. While it didn't reinvent the wheel so to speak, it took elements that felt familiar to fans of Assassin's CreedShadow of Mordor, and even Sekiro with its combat mechanics. The game was fluid and swift, giving players easy access to various weapons and skills with ease. Honing their skills led to players feeling nearly unstoppable on the battlefield, and the added multiplayer mode felt like a natural extension of the gameplay style. As such, changes in Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut could revitalize the Legends mode for fans.

The biggest factor at work towards revitalizing the multiplayer is simple timeliness. Legends wasn't included in the original Ghost of Tsushima at launch. Rather, the multiplayer mode came several months later, launching as a free expansion for Tsushima last October. This meant that many players that might have explored the separate mode more had already beaten Ghost of Tsushima's story. The game provided an incredible single-player experience with plenty of replay value, but many players had already moved to other titles before the multiplayer mode dropped. With the rerelease, Legends will be a part of the total package at launch.

Having the multiplayer included from the jump means that people jumping into Tsushima on PS5 either for the first time or as a replay will be more likely to engage in the mode. This will likely lead to a much more active playerbase for Legends, which in and of itself could shake up the multiplayer meta. There are also some simple quality of life controls that could open the mode up to a larger group of players. Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut is implementing changes to the controls for both accessibility and customization. For example, gamers will be able to enable an optional lock-on feature that could satisfy one of the few complaints some players had about combat.

Players will also have more freedom to remap the game's basic controls, which is a big deal for accessibility. Providing more options to customize the game's controls means that more people will be able to play the game comfortably, and by extension develop their skills. This could help introduce a wave of players that hadn't been able to enjoy the multiplayer before for challenges with the skill curve. This should all come as good news to fans looking to jump back into Legends when Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut releases later this year.
