Ghost of Tsushima has excited players with its two trailers, both of which have teased its gameplay and aesthetic qualities.  However, despite the incredible trailers, how the game functions is still an enigma. Fortunately, the art director of the upcoming game has given some indication of how players will navigate the large open-world and it is slightly unusual.

The developer of Ghost of Tsushima, Sucker Punch, is most recognisable for their work on the InFamous series. This new venture is quite a departure, as it is set in 13th century Japan although it does follow the studio's tradition of open-world games. There may have been some queries about how the developer would change its style to suit an open-world samurai adventure, yet the trailers have certainly squashed those concerns. Interestingly, the game appears to be focused on freely exploring the beautiful scenery that has been showcased thus far.

Jason Connel, art director, for the game has explained that there will not be traditional waypoints in the game. In fact, he stated that the game wanted players to follow their interest and discover the game through intrigue. Expanding he claimed, " There’s no waypoint. There’s nothing that says ‘Go here and look at this bamboo forest'”. This is certainly an interesting approach and this bold mechanic will only add to the intrigue established by Ghost of Tsushima's trailer.

The latest trailer revealing Ghost of Tsushima's summer 2020 release window has already sparked discourse about the narrative and the focus of the game. What is in no question, is the visual and cinematic qualities the game utilizes which seems to have left an impression on players. It will be interesting to see how the title combines its free-roaming nature, narrative and stunning visuals. Before the Game Awards, the game had players eager to see more about how the game would meld its teased elements together.

Players were desperate for information about Ghost of Tsushima in this years Game Awards. The trailer certainly delivered by adding more narrative information and a release date. Between now and next summer, there will likely be more information teased about how the game operates. For now, players can look forward to a game that encourages unbounded exploration and of course will have plenty of beautiful samurai battles.

Ghost of Tsushima is scheduled to release summer 2020 on PS4.
